Drove up to Torrance to meet with Jim Pierce who is a NASA scrutineer. Jim is a super cool guy and has quite a few road race and rally projects of his own. I got to snoop around the shop and check out an Evo swapped Group 5 mirage among other things! He scoped everything in the RS out and was satisfied with the cage construction, etc. I still have to get all my other safety gear, but that will come before the first stage rally event.
D’oh! The RS decided to chew up the passenger side inner CV boot. I thought I smelled some faint oil / grease burning smell on my way home, but after checking the engine oil I didn’t think about it again. The black grease against the white firewall was a dead giveaway of where it came from. Grease was burning up on the top of the exhaust manifold. Perhaps there was a small tear from the rally cross a couple of weekends ago.
Greg at Millennium Motorsports has all the right tools for anything car related. That stubborn 32mm axle nut on my spare hub flew of with barely any resistance. I soaked em for 2 days in PB Blaster too. The good news is that I had a replacement axle to swap out the busted CV boot one on the RS. The bad news is that one of the axles that was to be a spare replacement was damaged leaking grease out the splines of the inner CV. Ill be picking up a pair of these in a couple of weeks though, so it’s not that big of a deal.
Next on the list of upgrades is installing the RS roof vent (plus a new roof scoop that I just snagged off a guy in Chicago), upgraded engine / transmission mounts, and a replacement drive shaft. Fortunately I have a spare one of those. It sounds like the center support bearing is shot on the currently installed one. I hear clunking in the transmission tunnel when I hit the gas hard or let off quickly (could also be related to destroyed tranny mounts too).
Redline Rally delivered the goods once again, and we have most of the pieces of the graphics layout for the car. It will be a simple pattern on both sides with of course a healthy dose of sponsor vinyl. I will be sure to post pictures of the the car once everything is applied, it should be very soon!
