World Record Subaru Turnout Expected for Colin McRae Tribute

Racecar constructor Prodrive plans to commemorate the life of rally racing great Colin McRae with the gathering of over 1000 Subaru Imprezas at Prodrive’s Banbury, U.K. headquarters next month. McRae tragically passed away last September in a helicopter crash near his estate in England.

The tribute will feature a drive led by McRae’s World Rally Championship winning 1995 Subaru Impreza 555 beginning at McRae’s hometown of Lanark in Scotland and ending in Banbury.  Prodrive played a significant role in helping McRae win Britain’s first WRC title in ‘95, as well as the 1996 and 1997 manufacturer’s championship titles.

While in Banbury, a world-record number of Subarus are expected to circulate on Prodrive’s test track, followed by their arrangement on the track’s mile-long straight spelling out the WRC champion’s full name in 100-foot tall lettering.

“Colin was not only an exceptional driver, but also a remarkable person and a great friend to everyone at Prodrive,” company chairman David Richards said in a press release.  “Single-handedly he brought the sport of rallying into everyone’s living room, whether it was through his sideways exploits in the forest or through the many video games which bore his name.  I can not think of a more fitting tribute to Colin than a gathering of so many Subarus, a car for which he did so much to make as popular as it is today.”

Colin McRae’s tribute by Prodrive will take place August 30 and 31.  Owners of Subarus that are planning to participate in the activities will be required to register in order to receive a distinguishing placard. Participants will also be asked to pay a nominal $20 donation that will be dispersed amongst McRae’s chosen charities.
