Oregon Kicks Off SCCA Rallycross National Series of the Western States Championship
The sprawling Washington County Fair Complex hosted the first SCCA RallyCross National Series event of the Western States Championship this past weekend. Beautiful weather, quick cars and the signature spray of dirt was all it took to distract fairgoers from the venues standard activities.
The Modified Two-Wheel Drive class was straight out of National Geographic as the crowd watched a Falcon hunt down a Rabbit - the Volkswagen Rabbit GTI of Chris Sample that is, and the Ford Falcon of Cody Crane. Samples clean and consistent runs earned him the win by more than 13 seconds over Crane.
The Subaru Imprezas of Eric Zapareski and Rob Files may have had two days of clean runs, but a handful of downed cones couldnt stop the Subaru Forester of Paul Eklund on his romp to victory in the large Modified Four-Wheel Drive class. Eklunds nine-run total in his Subaru Forrester was still over two seconds quicker than that of Zapareski.
Another Subaru topped the Prepared All-Wheel Drive class. The Legacy GT of Charles Morrill bested his nearest competition, Kris Lilly, in a Mazda Protege, by nearly 25 seconds.
In Stock All-Wheel Drive, Jacob Sturgeon won the battle of the WRXs over David Brunner, while April Smiths Suzuki Swift was victorious in Stock Front-Wheel Drive. The lone female entrant in Oregon beat out the Ford Escort GT of Tim Tokstad by 50 seconds.
Speaking of lone, the events only truck entry, the Chevy S-10 of Jason Strangland, cruised to the Stock Rear-Wheel Drive win.
The next SCCA RallyCross National Series event is part of the Eastern States Championship and is scheduled for June 17 in Oakland Acres, Va.
