Thread: Rally Wagon - Stock to Stage Ready, Under $5k

  1. #1

Default Rally Wagon - Stock to Stage Ready, Under $5k

    $0 --> Stage Ready < $5k?

For fork's sake, I think I have a problem....I'm Dan, and I'm an Impreza addict...

I picked this up this afternoon:

It's a wee bit long-in-the-tooth, but for the price, it can't be beat. I troll craiglist all the time (not like that, pervert!) and these deals pop up occasionally. This one happens to be a 2nd owner, since 10k miles, regular-old 98 Impreza wagoooon. Owned by some nice old bat up in Mass.

The Specs: 212k on the ticker, 2.2liter, 5 speed, awd, clutch shot, rear quarters snotty and patched with fiberglas.

    The Question:

What do I do with it?

    Option 1: Rallycross?

Option 2: a second stage rally car? If I go this way, I'll most likely snag a SafeDrives cage and document it as a "how cheap can you hit the stages if you have tools and a welder and a drill press" (leaning this way)

Or, a $2012 Grassroots challenge car?

Either way, this thread will document its transformation from one of the absoultely filthiest cars I've ever seen, interior wise......I gotta explain....it is soooooo nasty inside, looks like a bunch of drunk smurfs used it for a frat house for the last 14 years...
anyway, it's being dragged back to Abington Rally HQ, my garage, on Saturday and the evaluation will being. More pics, for those with strong stomachs, when it gets here.

This does not do the squallor that is this interior any justice...

So those 15" steelies have pretty new tires on them, they'll be first up for sale to finance this beotch.

I am not sure if I'd even want to sit in that drivers seat...

As long as the interior is going to be ripped out, good buy, sir! Can't wait to see what she turns into.

I'll take some nice close-ups of the nastyness before it goes seaworthy!

Looks like it will go one of two ways at this point:

    1. Clean, buff, flip.

    2. RallyWagon - major purpose being to emphasize the build process for the grassroots (me) enthusiasts.

If I go Option Two (which very well may become the name of this car) I'll go with the cheapest paint I can find that is still good enough for a rally car. Given that Tractor Supply is pretty much nation wide and/or the enamels they sell are available online, Option Two might end up International Harvester Red, John Deere Green, or another off-the-shelf color. It's all about keeping it cheap.
