View Full Version : Random (seemingly) check engine? At 1400 miles? WTF?

OK - bought an '07 rex wagon and have 1400 miles on it. In that 1400 miles, I've ONLY run 93 octane. I put in the SPT short ram cone filter kit and heat shield.
I have a recurring CEL issues already. VIP checked the code for free for me, and they said that it's a "cylinder 3 misfire". Thankfully, the guy cleared it for me before I went on a 400 mile trip so that the cruise would work. The CEL came back after ~200 miles.
Anyone else run into this before? I did a quick google, and it seems that sometimes if you replace the cylinder 3 plug/coil/wire/combination of all three, it'll go away.
At this point I'm just annoyed, because i <3 cruise (lacrosse injury + rebuilt right knee = painful to keep leg in one position for hours at a time).
Thoughts?

Thats strange to get something like that so early in your ownership. Take it back to the dealership and make them fix it. Thats what warranties are for.
BTW, you're lucky you even have 93 octane available. We run on 91 out here in CA

I agree - it is very early for this to be happening. However, I'd feel a lot better about things if I knew what was causing the "misfire" rather than rely on them to catch the culprit themselves.
Not that I don't trust them in particular, I'm just still walking a little funny from the last time I took my Saab into the stealership for service.

I put the intake on at ~200 miles (I bought it with 169 on it). I got the CEL two days - approximately 200 miles - later.
It seems to go away after about five starts or so. Strangest thing ever.

I know its 'SPT' brand...but I'll bet you my turbo upgrade that's what's causing it.
put the stock intake back on.....reset the ecu (disconnect the battery for 5 minutes)....and see if it comes back.

I'll try that tomorrow or Wednesday...good thing I kept EVERYTHING from the stock intake, eh?
Until then, I'll just have to make do with riding the "hog"...pics in a sec

Odd, I've been running my SPT intake for 15k miles and not a single problem. I suggest disconnecting the battery and then seeing if it reappears. If it doesn't go away then warranty the thing as it prolly indicates a problem somewhere that the intake probably isn't the cause of.

I agree with seb. Usually you dont get a "misfire" from somthing as simple as an intake upgrade. Maybe your sensor got messed up and didnt tell the motor how much air is going into it and it had to much fuel and bent a rod. Hopefully not what it was but I would take it to the dealer and let them fix their mistake.
