what do you tell people when.....

So almost every week, people ask 'what did you do this weekend', 'what did you do last weekend', or 'what do you do for fun?'

When I answer Rally, I always get, 'uh, what is rally?' I've come up with several different ways to describe it, but most people still have no clue.

What are some ways that you describe it for people who have no idea what it is?

Most people I talk to seem to have heard of it. They wonder where we race. I just tell them out in the desert, like Baja, but on this side of the border. Seems to satisfy the people here in SoCal.

Much tougher to explain to females, but they just know it is racing and are satisfied by that.

i really go different ways with explenations, depending on the crowd and demographic. most of the time it's just "well its like nascar, but more fun with a combination of left AND right turns on dirt." lol

When I say that we were at a rally / rallycross event, its is true that some people have at least heard about rally. When people haven't I generally say its off road racing for cars and they get it.

The ones that know a little bit more than the average person always say the same thing next:

"Oh that's the crazy racing where the cars always flip into trees or mow down a dozen unsuspecting spectators, right? I love watching that stuff on YouTube..." :roll:

with a lot of coworkers who just drive their cars to get from A to B i found a few ways to explain things that seem to work.

AutoCross : Parking lot with a coned course.
Rally cross : Dirt lot with a coned course.
Full stage rally : Closed Road, driving really fast :P or trying to at least hehehe
Track day... they aren't that dumb :)

Example: what did you do this past weekend

.. I had a blast! I raced in a dirt lot, on a coned off course.

.. .. Oooh. that sounds like fun. did you do that in your .. is it a subaru , the one with the wing...

A barista asks me, "do you race your car?"
I said yes
She asks, "on a track or just rally?"
I said mostly rally-cross
She asks me where......

I'm guessing she must be in the know or close to someone in the know.

Honestly I'm such a worthless pile of nothing until after my first cup of coffee that she could have asked me to sleep with her and my response probably would have been along the lines of "large light roast please"
