I took some good advice from our pals at NASIOC and decided to relace my existing Gear Oil(70,000 miles old oem oil) because I was having problems with grinding going into first from a stop and shifting down from 2nd gear. I didn't believe that gear oil would help with these problems(Still a Noob), but after reading more and more reviews and contemplating replacing my gears with legacy gears 1st and 2nd or even RA gears(Hopefully One Day  ), I decided to take some advice and replace the gear oil before moving foreward on anything else.

So after driving out to the El Mirage Lakebed with Lorenkb on saturday and getting frustrated with a certain left hairpin turn after a long sweeping right turn that I would fly through in second gear, I wanted to be able to drop it into 1st and have a good time with that hairpin but it would grind on me, I decided to order 4 quarts of Redline LightWeight ShockProof Gear Oil on sunday.

Oil arrived today courtesy of our local UPS Man. I got lazy and finally decided to drain my tranny and put new stuff around 6:30. By 8:00(After letting drain for about an hour) I was cruising around and having a good time.

Overall, I feel much more confident shifting from second into first(No grinding at all so far), all shifts feel smoother including shifting into first from a stop and I honstly feel like maybe my acceleration feels smoother now too(this could be in my head, but yeah... maybe someone could explain this one to me).

Oh also, I drive an 04 wrx.

Not too suprising as you get a lot of contamination in the tranny casing too from metal shavings to dirt working its way in. You should do the rear diff while you're at it.

REDLINE FTW!! I should be a rep for these guys....

so I also use the lightweight.....before that, I was on the super light weight. I've never had the 1st gear griding issue, but I also use about .75 quarts of Redlint MT-90 (its basically a syncromesh). Lets just say I can put it in 1st @ 40mph (not that I'd ever need to, but its nice to have options....LOL)

Seriously though, I can easily put it in first from a roll up to +20mph, (w/o heal-toe'ing) which, in rallyX, definitely gives me an advantage over the guys who have 1st gear issues.

Put it in your rear diff too (redline 75W90NS).

I have 78K miles now....been using redline since 30K miles.....love it.

I never hear anything bad about redline. This is on my to-do list. Another success story will be on its way in the next month

Good to hear that it made a difference. Where did you order from?

UP2MTNS: So you are using a combination of Lightwieght plus .75 quarts MT-90?

Redline works great, in fact i use it in my center diff / transmission. However if you're really serious about keeping that rear diff lubed up, this is the absolute end all solution.

L.S.D. OIL 80W-140
For rear L.S.D which is exposed by high load and heat with high performance engine, tire and suspension. Fit for 4WD rear L.S.D & FR rear L.S.D. Also good for use in High temperature region and Hot Summer. For all mechanical L.S.D.

80w140 FTW. I swear by this stuff, simply because it fixed a grindy / chattery rear diff when nothing else would (including Redline Shockproof)

It isn't cheap though, ran me about $30 a quart. yeah thats right... $$$. When i described the problem to my buddy that works on drift cars, he suggested it (since they often run their LSD's in hot climates as well) and it did the trick.

Its pretty damn impossible to find. I have my drift buddy hook it up when its in stock. Z1 performance will ship it to you though. They're out of the midwest somewhere.

oh and what you see in the picture... is the only writing in english ;)

That last sentence is what gets me. Does that imply it's only suitable for a clutch or torsen type LSD? Isn't the WRX rear diff a viscous LSD?

UP2MTNS: So you are using a combination of Lightwieght plus .75 quarts MT-90?

yeah, our tranny holds like 3.2 quarts....but not all of it drains out, so I basically put 2 quarts of the lightweight, and then fill the rest of the way with mt-90.

Aaron's crazy Japanese fluid is for the rear diff though.....LOL. redline makes a 70w140NS that's pretty heavy, and is suitable for racing. I should try that actually, because for the snow, etc, you want a fluid that has more friction and engages the differential more.

RE: tranny viscosity, this is from Redline's website about their ShockProof gear oils:

The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness greater than an SAE 250 grade, with the same low fluid friction as with our 80W140.

so it protects like a 2x thicker oil, but behaves like someting thinner. I guess its just like an extra thick condom that feels super thin

edit: well this thread got off topic quickly. LOL. then again.....hot cars.....hot high performance oil.....how can it NOT turn to sex?

I need to do all of my oils have about 85k on the rear end as well as the trans and center diff.

Anyone know about the Royal Purple lubes?
