Any parts of the car you are focusing on in particular?

The GF's (wagon) are 99% compatible with GC (sedan) parts.
The only parts that won't work are the obvious ones; rear half body panels, rear seats, etc. Suspension, drivetrain, exhaust, etc are a the same.

Hmm... When I'm in a particularly good mood and feeling like dreaming for a little bit...haha... I look for totaled STi's...cars.com (http://www.cars.com), Autotrader.com (http://www.autotrader.com) or check out RS25 and Nasioc for the classifieds. Craigslist is also a decent place to look.

It wouldnt be a bad idea haha
I've read up on some people on RS25 that have had decent luck with their RS tranny putting up with it. They claim they dont dump the clutch at all, and their transmissions have held up.
I'd still be nervous everytime I hit the throttle.

would I need to do a six speed tranny, or will a 5sp work?

I think nearly 5mt or 6mt will bolt up to the STi motor. You can get the ver5/6 STi transmission, which is a 5mt. or you can opt for a more recent version, which came with the 6mt.
