In Japan, all the WRX's 93-early 97 have an R160 drive train, and the late 97's-01 have the R180. My question is, are they the same in the states?? I'm gonna do an STi swap on an older Impreza when I get back, but I want the R180 so I can put the Brembo's on. Any info will help, thanx.

when you do the swap, you will have to swap the entire drivetrain from an STi. Only the STi's have the R180 here. And by have to, I mean it's in your best interest to swap in an STi drivetrain. IIRC There is a guy on RS25 with a ver7 STi motor mated to his stock RS transmission. But he has to be easy on it.Also, if you swap from an '04 STi you don't need the drivetrain to swap in the brembos. The bolt pattern is the same as an RS or WRX. But you will need 17 inch wheels along with adapter brackets for the calipers. Swapped GC's are sexy! When do you plan on coming back?

I'm coming back in September. I have an early '97 STi here, but it has the 160. My buddy with a 96 STi has the 180. He's dropped the 6 speed in it when he blew is dog mission, which meant he swapped the entire drive train as well. That's where this question came from. I want exactly what I have here, just LHD. Is it hard to find the 180 with 6 speed??

All usdm sti's come with the R180 rear, and 6 speed trans.
You could probably find a wrecked car fairly easily once you get back.
ILikeItSideways is correct, if you do the engine swap, do the entire drivetrain while your at it. When I swapped my GF I kept the stock trans for about 3 months before the power annihilated second gear.

subie88 has a 05 STi in his 99 rs, but has a built 5spd ppg transmission, its pretty sweet, its got the stock 99 rear in it which im not sure as to what it is, if its a 160 or what, i just know its 4.11 gearing though....
we only got the R180 in 3.9 and 3.545
gc8STI, just curious, why so interested in the rear end?

because I need it for the 6 speed. Like I said, I'll do an STi swap. I appreciate the pointers, but I know I gotta swap the whole drivetrain, that's why I'm asking what cars have the R180 that isn't an STi, if there is any in the states. Over here all late 97's and up have it.

There was no WRX in North American before MY2002, that used an R160 as does everything else except the MY2004+ STi.
Here's a link with good cross references to engines/transmissions, should have everything you ever want....

Yeah, I know there was any WRX 'til '02, I was just hopeful that there was an impreza with the 180. Just for less work in the swap. If I gotta do it all, then so be it. Just time and money I was hoping to save.
