Let's get this started right.

SUSPENSION
So my OBS originally had 6.5 inches of ground clearance. OBS struts will fit the GC/GF chassis and is an easy swap to get more clearance. Forester or Legacy Outback struts will get you the most lift.

I have Forester XT struts on my OBS. They are for the most part a direct bolt on for this chassis. I had to modify the rear shock towers to get em to fit. Here are before and after pics w/the strut lift. I got them cheap from a guy who installed STI struts on his Forester

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/boswan/liftedOBS.jpg

Scorpion has spring to get more ride height.
http://www.renickmotorsports.com/oscommerce/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1220

BRAKES
Most of the parts from WRXs and Legacy are a direct bolt on.

TIRES
With a strut lift, you can increased ground clearance with bigger tires. Interco makes super swampers that are 27 inches. Good for off roading, but they wear out quickly. Rally tires are great, but they also wear out quickly and they are hard to find and can be expensive.

ARMOR
There are a few companies that make armor,

Oh, one more thing.

http://rumblesoftracing.com/

There's another source for skidplates, though I don't know if he's up and running just yet. That's run by http://rallynotes.com which is Kris Marciniak, aka webkris, the founder of NESIC. He now lives in CA and rallies his Neon.

My skidplate is from Kris, bought it in 2000. He did a run of them back then and a little later, but stopped doing it for a while.

My mod list is pretty small.

Suspension:

20mm rear sway bar

Interior:

Autometer dual gauge pod on a-pillar
ScanGaugeII mounted where dash cup holder was

Transmission:

Short-throw shifter

Exterior:

JDM red/clear tails
Clear sidesmarkers
Clear corners
Tinted bumper blinkers
Mesh fog covers
RB5 rear wing

Engine:

AVO turbo kit
PP6 piggyback

Exhaust:

High-flow cat (part of turbo kit)
Stromung dual-tip axle-back

Short list, but it all works together plenty well. Fast in the straight, corners great, and comes out of the corners like a pissed-off wombat. Need to try to reinstall my front strut tower bar, not sure if it will fit with the top mount intercooler.

That lift is amazing. I thought my GC was lifted a good amount until i saw this. Nice work!!

And I can vouch for the Rally Armor products. I have mudflaps and their skidplate. Both have put up with a good amount of abuse. The mud flaps have lasted over a year now through many rallyx's and brisk gravel road driving.

Thanks.

It's just Forester XT struts.

The front was a direct swap, the rear had some issues with the top hats not working. I had to oblong outer bolt.

I am still trying to resolve some issues with my swap bars and end links. They are pretty maxed out with the stock ones. I get this nasty clunking sometimes when I turn.

BTW wish me luck this weekend at the Johnson Valley Rally Cross.

Thanks

i like all of your cars

I have not dyno'd it, I would guess between 190 and 200 hp (crank) and probably a bit more torque. It is about as fast as a stock WRX but with much less lag.

Orion
03-10-2007, 06:26 AM
Storz - the AccessPort for the 05+ cars should be out in the near future. Check out SubieSport to see what it can do.

Elliot - I rode in a friend's 00 sedan while down in San Anotnio at the SCCA convention that has an SRS 20 map. We went out to dinner with 5 people in the car (4 of us easily over 200) and it pulled pretty darn hard. The car is the only Subie to trophy in DSP at the '06 Solo Nats. I was VERY impressed!

well, there's plenty of suspension goodies for ya. i stayed away from power-adders being that it's a NA 4. there's only so much you CAN do aside from just flat out strapping a turbo/intercooler on there. that's where the $$$ comes in. budget-wise there's plenty of suspension stuff available though.

1998 DOHC RS coupe, black with stock gold five spokes.

interior:

Nothing

exterior:

Pink STi badge. (It adds 10 hp you know....at the WHEELS)

Performance:

4 into 1 headers:
high flow cat
Borla cat-back exhaust
2001 SOHC swap (got rid of that treacherous 1998 DOHC)
Street Cams
Ported and polished by yours truly
Arias 11:1 pistons

Don't ask why but I thought it would be cool to an NA build up instead of the usual WRX swap....plus it was a lot cheaper.

I know, I forget what a clean GC should looks like. :lol2: Once I get my wheels back from TinCanMotorsports with their purdy new powdercoat, I will clean the beast up and post some pics. I wish mine was black:cry:

got my wheels back. had them powdercoated. the finish is a sandpaper like, rough finish. looks sooo nice. Antonio did an awesome job on them, they look way better than the rattle can job I had done to them!

pic doesn't do the color justice, it is darker than appears.

I have been lurking on this forum for quite some time, and it has been a nice resource for me as I've started making some mods.

99 EJ22 OBS w/ MT

Forester struts for a small lift.
Front and rear skids
Tractor lights mounted on pivots on the roof and fitted with 100 watt small aircraft use bulbs

I have some Hella Supertones and red RallyArmor flaps on the way. :headbang:

These are the only post-mod pictures that I have. It could be dirtier.

So I have a couple questions for you folks who know more than I do. I'm thinking about adding a CAI/SRI. I understand that there can be problems with doing this to certain normally aspirated subys. How do I tell whether these problems will affect my car? Specifically, how do I know if I have a MAF sensor that would be problematic with a CAI? Sorry if these questions are stoooopid.

Any intake recommendations for my car given those concerns? My priorities are performance and price. I'm single and live in MT so it can be as loud as all heck. Any other recs for inexpensive performance mods for my OBS?

Thanks and I'll try to get some pics of her when she's muddier.

nice OBS. my .02: keep an eye on the inner front boots-they stretch a little with the forester setup-you may as well order a couple empi's to keep on hand if the originals haven't blown yet.

Perrin Lightened crank pulley?
Cat back or axle back exhaust?
upgrade to stiffer rear sway bar and endlinks
upgrade front endlinks

as with my 98 obs (man, I like the 99 obs) the best performance mods are those that keep it running-so, regular maintenance and inspection and eventual replacement of items like ball joints and bushings etc.

I'd leave the intake stock-that's just me. unless you are going to do full 2.5 exhaust then the CAI won't do much.

I think the lift looks awesome-it's the best thing you could have done, in addition to the plate and protector. Hellas are the best-i love it when people jump.

I am so ready for winter...

Thanks for the tip on the boots. I'll keep an eye on 'em. And thanks for posting about the Forester strut lift on here. Your posts (and a couple other people's, I think) inspired me to go for it and I'm very satisfied with the results.

Any suggestions for which way to go with a budget exhaust system? Mine is completely stock right now, and I have friends with welding equipment and spare time. I'm sure that they could help make any fittings that might be weird if I were to go with a 2.5 system.

Also, those pictures in the snow are from the summer! Good ol' Montucky weather for ya.

budget would straight pipe-ha. seriously, I lucked out on a topspeed Pro 1 axleback (2.5 ") and had the flange work done at midas. the midpipe is original though. I haven't seen a lot for the GFs.

btw, I just scored all 4 corners off an 08 forester xt sports (about .4" higher than the 98-01 struts). seems the xt owners are all going to STi setups and the STi owners are going to coilovers-everybody wins. probably wait till next spring to put them on though-looking for some crossmember spacers (whatever those are).

You can get a 2.5" sti catback for about $90.
I streight piped mine (kind of, I don't have a mufler). It sounds good, still quiet due to all the cats and resignaters.
Free, with extra random parts.

with your lift did you use the foresters struts and springs? or just the forester struts with the obs springs. It seems to me that your lift isnt as radical as others.

I used the full Forester struts and springs, so the lift should be pretty similar to what others have gotten from that setup. The car might be sitting slightly lower in these pictures because I have a lot of junk in it from that weekend. I was even carrying a bunch of firewood in there.

I had the strut towers drilled out for the Forester tophats, which in hindsight was a mistake. I should've just swapped my stock tophats in. I think it should've worked. But I went to a shop for advice that didn't necessarily know what they were doing. Oh well, you live and you learn, I suppose.

I took the car to an alignment shop after I finished everything, and they said there was just a little bit of excess camber that they couldn't get rid of, but it's pretty darn close. I haven't noticed any uneven tire wear or anything. Rear camber bolts would easily fix this, and they're on my to do/to buy list.

sorry, can you share anymore about the shop you had do the work? what was your final rear camber? toe is okay? do you think a 1 degree bolt will fix it? how do you like it so far? pics?

Let me see if I can address these questions:

Firstly, I did the fronts myself. They bolted right up. When I moved on to the rears, I found that the pattern of the studs on the Forester tophat didn't quite match the OBS pattern that the strut tower was drilled for, and I couldn't figure out how to swap the mount out.

I took it to a shop called SunRunner out in Belgrade, MT. The drive out there, by the way, with mushy brakes and the car in wheelie mode, was quite an adventure. They have a reasonable shop rate and I had had positive experiences with them in the past. The guy there insisted that the tophat couldn't be swapped, and I had to work the next few days and was getting sick of having no wheels. So I just told him to drill out the mount on the top of the strut tower to make it fit. I sent him pictures from this site of someone else who had done it. The dude there was kind of a PITA. He took forever to do the work and he didn't want to be told how to do ANYthing. At least it was cheap.

At the time, I had no idea how to do my own alignment, though I've now read the stickied thread at NASIOC. I took the car to some random shop in town to have a 4-wheel alignment done. They said it all came out fine except I ended up with a little extra camber in the rear. Toe is perfect. It is so close that the alignment guys didn't seem at all concerned about it, and I didn't ask for the numbers since I was clueless about alignment at the time. I was just happy to have my car back. I haven't noticed an obvious negative effect on my handling or uneven tire wear, so I haven't been in a rush to drop $60 on camber bolts and do the alignment myself, but I bet that's all it would take to make it right.

As for pics - the white OBS on top of the page is mine with the Fozzie struts and springs, but it's sitting in soft dirt and is loaded down with hundreds of pounds of gear. Those pics are from a skiing/car camping trip to the Beartooth Highway last May. Chasing me through the muddy campground and up the slick highway was pretty tough for the other shuttle drivers. :)

I really enjoy the extra clearance that I get from the lift, as well as the look. It's subtle, but I do get some nice comments on it occasionally. Handling seems identical to stock, except perhaps with a touch more body roll under hard cornering, but I'm gonna fix that. :)

I have a 20 mm WRX rear swaybar coming in the mail along with a package of bushings, short throw shifter, and rear endlinks from KartBoy. I'm hoping to get that stuff on there before I enter the local autocross on October 5, so I'll take a few additional pictures of the car and I'll be certain to post them up, including some more detailed shots of the suspension setup.

One more thing: the place to get any sort of intake/exhaust or suspension work done in Bozeman is Tom's Alignment. He bent the pipe for my GanzFlow-style intake, he races his own drag cars, and he's got an amazing reputation. Now that I know what I'm doing, I would never go anywhere else.
