The car will still run, and if there are no SMOG laws up in OR you should be good to go. However, id expect that a CEL will probably show from your O2 sensors.

+1

if your cats really are 'plugged' (i've had that happen before...NA car running too rich, unburned fuel hits the cat and melts it) your car is probably running very inefficiently anyways.

I've read that with some cars equipped with two O2 sensors (one in front and one behind the Cat.) you can remove the cat then get an adapter for your rear O2 bung to move the sensor outward and have it pickup less dirty exhaust gases, thereby fooling the ECU.

Can anyone confirm if this works on this generation Subaru? (or any car, for that matter)

This works on an obd2 2000 RS, atleast mine. The front o2 sensor is the factory AFR meter, and the second is strictly for emissions sake. by using a bunch of washers or making an extension out of pipe you just need to elevate the rear 02 out of the stream and it will eliminate MIL.

I too am feeling suspect to plugged cats. I've read a bit about getting a track pipe made since I don't have to worry about emission laws either. Any thoughts on the benefits or hurts of this? I have a friend who can make the track pipe for a lot cheaper than getting new cats or a high flow one.

high flow cats are a great replacement if you have a couple of extra hundred dollars laying around. If not cut it out, weld in a replacement pipe, and find an 02 extension housing for the 2nd 02 and your good to go
