Nice ride dude, I can't wait to see what you have in store to offer for the Imprezas. If you offer a bunch of good products I can guarantee you'll be sending stuff to me all the time.

Any chance in making a subframe brace to bolts onto the current subframe to help prevent it from tacoing like we saw yesterday?

Way ahead of you on that one, I am hoping to have the setup ready to atleast show you guys(on my car) possibly some for sale by Antioch 2. Its funny cause my buddy who owns M1 Development makes one for the "tarmac queens" but is to liteweight for off road abuse. Mine will have similar features (tie in/triangulation to the rear pivots on the lower control arms and engine x-member mounting) but will be stronger in the front under the core support and be more off-road worthy all around and also will allow a skidplate to be attached.

Sorry for the n00bish question, but does this bolt on top of the existing subframe to reinforce it? or is it a replacement?

Also, who taco'd their subframe? was it the car that got stuck trying to romp after Kyle?

No No the black one in the background is the stock one. It replaces the stock one!!

The dude without the bumper mangled his, his radiator was almost hitting the crank pulley it was bent so bad. Also drt suby did some tweaking to his. Neither of their hoods are happy about opening now. The scary part is that is all that protects the radiator. Now no one had skidplates so that did'nt help at all.

sebhockey

I doubt a skidplate would have helped too much, might have been enough that it didn't pinch the lower radiator hose. This new subframe and a beefy skidplate would definately be great in preventing this from happening to anyone else.

I love the fact that I got them cheap!!! They are awesome though, dry lakebeds chew the outside edges up pretty good.

I believe on the RA skidplate they bolt into the 3 holes where the plastic bolted to??? Not 100% though.

Yeah I'll be upgrading my subframe, but I'm looking more for a lightweight tarmac style frame (I'll stay on flat dirt next time). One thing I'm worried about with making a super beefy subframe, is that upon impact your subframe might stay true, but the parts it mounts to might be weaker and you'd end up transferring the damage to those. Keep in mind where the weakest link will be when designing this. If you hit like I did, something will have to give. I think a skidplate would have helped the car skid off the sand where it hit, rather than digging in and crumpling like it did.
Here's pictures of the aftermath, to give a better idea of the damage:

I'll get you a price on the one in the pic. It is definetly more suited for tarmac, it only weighs 15lbs and is chromoly tig welded.

Thats why we adjust and fix the weak points as we find them, right now the subframe is the weak point for us. If it causes another problem then we strengthen that too.

Honestly though a skid plate under one of these will prolly prevent it from happening. As if the front lip of the skid plate is angled at say 30-45 degrees and in front of the subframe it should cause the force of an impact at this point to transfer down and below the skidplate and little to no damage to the car. This assumes a skid plate that is strong enough/or braced enough to do that job such that the forward momentum of the car causes the car to move up and over the point of impact on the skidplate and not just bend the skidplate flat against the subframe.

They mainly tie the roll cage into the cab (similiar to the a-pillar on a wrc car) And also add strength. Look closely to the opening between gussets on the a-pillar....built in handle for pulling yourself in and out.

I may put up a few more pics for all to see (if its ok with A)

JR 2:1 steering reducer
Modified power steering pump by Howe performance steering

Of course none of this is made specific for the Subys but they are common racing parts for steering systems. I will be making the complete system bolt in.

Looks great, how long did the group n motor mounts take to install? How about a install write up of how you did it. Subaru's way for install on their SPT site involves doing too much to bother with em. I've seen other write ups, but they don't give me much confidence in being able to safely install em with the tools I have available.

I went ahead and made some lower control arms. I made the new arms 40mm wider per side and 20mm further forward for more caster.

For some reason I thought that after working all day friday I would work on my car fri nite. Bad Idea! I ended up working on my car for 36 hrs straight cause I decided to park my car in the alley and pull off my lower control arms cut them apart and make new ones. Well it rained all fri nite, but I got them done. This was spur of the moment and I did'nt have my camera at work but I will take pics.

The intake is still in the works. The main hurdle is making something that won't hurt performance but will filter dirt better than stock and be less bulky. The factory intake is by far the way to go but I'm looking to make something smaller. I will prob work on it more when I'm ready to have my car tuned that way I can see what the new intake is/or is not doing. Alot more will happen next year. I'm hoping it will be a big year for me.

JacksonRally

It's time for a little update. Car has been back from the dealer but its still not running like it should/used to. I did however replace my intercooler with another stock one and the car was almost normal. My intercooler was very, very clogged with muck. Now when I drive my car for atleast an hour straight it starts acting as if someone is "choking" the intake again. I've had a catless DP laying around for awhile so I finally decided to throw it on to see if possibly I had a clogged/damaged cat. Not so much. But now my problem evolved from choking to popping/sputtering at 4500rpm. Thats where its at now.

Just before Laughlin I made a skid plate for my car. Pics to come.

Heres a pic of when all my engine trouble began. Outside of Laughlin, somewhere on I-40.

No problems what so ever. Mine are 1.000'' thick and therefor required longer studs....so I used 3/8'' bolts and tack-welded them into the tophat cause I still can't find longer replacement metric studs.

Do you mind sharing your offset? Also if you are running a spacer to clear the calipers.

There is a good discussion going on this here:

It seems that you are the one making the mold here. Even though you are 5x114.3 the sizing you are running should be the same for the 5x100 guys.

Thats what I was told. I looked into bearings for about $80 and the motor builder says the ones he uses are like $400??? He's the boss and has done Subaru/Rally motors before. I will be getting the ARP headstuds ;-). I just want good parts to handle the mild bolt ons I will be doing.

Fantastic!

Come to think of it maybe some companies like JUN or Cosworth have their own bearings.

I was reading an interview with the president of JUN and he commented that they didn't make all of their parts but they did shop work out to their own tolerances.

A quote:

"American tuners worry about cost first and quality second. Japanese are the opposite."

I agree with getting the right part first and building for efficient power. Good luck with your next step. 8)

Speaking of which, before you get rid of the original intake setup you might want to do some data logging to see how the MAF sensor should behave. That way you know for sure whether the new intake is doing its job. I have a Tactrix cable just sitting on my desk. Let me know if you want to use it.

Yeah you may as well be speaking swahili to me cause I have no idea what you just said :lol2: ......data what? Tactrix cable (like for t.v.???) I'm no motor guy remember. However the "Baja Car" that is in the shop is pretty much getting what I'm gonna do, and he has "ran" the numbers for his new intake.

Well why the hell aren't you fluent in swahili? :unamused:

You can connect a cable (the Tactrix cable) to your OBDII port. From there you can hook up a laptop and record just about any engine parameter(s) you want to. The problem that a lot of aftermarket intakes run into is making the MAF sensor read inaccurately. MAF sensors can be very touchy when it comes to turbulence introduced by your intake. To play it safe it would be a good idea to compare the MAF readings stock to the new intake to make sure nothing is wonky. A wideband 02 sensor in the exhaust to verify air/fuel ratio would be a good thing as well. Doing all this will insure you aren't running engine-destroying lean while your MAF sensor sits there and says everything is A-OK.

And damn you to hell for your forged goodness! :punch:
