I was just looking at rally tires. I'm not looking to buy a set, just browsing. When I look at the sizes though, I'm a bit confused. 14/62/15? 16/65/15? It may be a noob question, and I'm sorry if it's been covered (couldnt find anything on a search), but how do you read these sizes? I really dont know how to word my question, so I hope you all know what I'm getting at.
I'm just used to seeing sizes such as 205/55/16, so I was a little dumbfounded when I read those sizes.

Not gonna happen. I don't think anyone makes a 16" rally tire anymore, let alone a 17". You can get snow tires, but not real rally tires.

I'm using 16/65-15 Michelins, which are equivalent to like a 205/65/15...

read'em the same way.
Your first size, for example, is 14mm wide with a 62% aspect ratio on a 15 inch wheel.

most RALLY tires you find are going to be 15"
and only a few kinds of 15" wheels fit over WRX brakes:

I don't think so... :nono
Try this chart...

It lists the BFG equivalent to the Michelin tires. The BFG's are listed using the sizing standard you are used to.
So, a 14/62/15 is approximately a 175/70-15 and a 16/65/15 is roughly a 185/70-15.
If I remember correctly, the first number is the tread width in cm (not carcass width in mm like you are used to), the second number is the overall diameter of the tire in cm (not the sidewall ratio to the carcass width) and obviously the last number is the rim size in inches.

This is also inaccurate. The WRX calipers can take a slight bit of grinding to fit under a great many 15" wheel choices, not just fancy expensive motorsport wheels but also cheap, plentiful stock Subaru alloy wheels. If you are on a budget y ou can easily fun $20 junkyard alloys with little risk of bending them if you choose the right wheel from the past Subaru offerings. The fancy 4 pot brakes are a different story but are still capable of fitting under lots of wheels.

Even the Team Dynamics occasionally require some grinding on the WRX calipers to get them to fit without scrapping.
When you do get around to putting rally tires on your car, try a bunch of different rims to test fit them. There are several options out there that can be made to fit over the stock WRX brakes without too much effort.

Or was he being serious and just doesn't know his metric measurements? Unfortunately the Internet has a wonderful way of loosing sarcasm.
You're probably right, but if the OP didn't pick that up and though he meant cm rather than mm, that could lead him seriously astray and make him think we run skinny tires with really low sidewalls. :?

thank you very much for the chart Tim. i assume "carcass" width is from sidewall to sidewall?

Don't quite me on this, but I think the typical measurement for the "carcass" is for the widest part of the tire. Most likely the sidewalls. The Rally tires are measured to the outside edge of the tread blocks.
