Hey guys I have some depressing news all the sudden I am burning oil and there is a lot of it being burnt so I need to know what this could be and how to fix it + the cost of fixing it. thanks for any help you can give me.

Welcome.

Loss of oil volume could be caused by many things (loose oil filter or drain plug, worn oil ring on pistons, cracked ring land on pistons, etc).

What symptoms is the car exhibiting? How do you know it is "burning" oil? Until we understand more I will estimate it costing between $0 and $"all of it".

if your burning oil in the engine its probably a valve seal

welcome. how do you know you are burning oil? did this happen all of a sudden? is the engine smoking and if so when? start up, acceleration, deceleration or all the time? is the engine stock or what mods? how many miles on the engine.

the two most common problems are burnt piston/bad oil ring or blown turbo (if you have one). sometimes it is worn valve guides and/or valve guide seals that are dried out & hard.

if your sure its burning oil, pull the plugs and see if you got residue on them, if you can't find any its probably your turbo. If you do, do a compression test and that'll let you know if your rings are going. If thats good, its probably a valve seal.

Its defiantly burning oil I pulled the plugs before I set up this thread. Yes this did happen all the sudden and the engine is stock 130,000 miles. turned it on in my garage and there was smoke building up and it was definatly burning oil. And its not leaking from any where all around the motor is dry. Sadly no turbo at least not yet. If money wasn't an issue right now I wouold just swap it.

a compression test is the next thing i would do. even though the oil ring can be bad or stuck & you can still have good compression. after the compression test, if you find a difference or low cylinder, perform a leak down test to identify if it is in the top end or bottom end.

have you had any work recently done on the car? has the performance declined since you have noticed the burning oil? any CEL light or codes?

No the car drives fine and the code is po420 says it could be
the catalytic converter, misfire or running condition. It also says large vacum leak, or engine oil leakage into exhaust. At least thats what autozones equipment said.

with the engine running at normal temps, remove the oil fill cap. what do you see/feel? is there a lot of air being pumped out? if you remove the intake pipe off the throttle body, is there a lot of oil/gunk build up? LMK

don't know I wil go find out now.

Air comes out every time a cylinder fires, and the throttle body looks alright not any kind of build up that I noticed. This has only been happening for a short period of time.

I would go with the piston rings being bad or something having a leak somewhere.

if it is pumping out air, your problem is bottom end based. either piston/ring/cylinder or a combination of all three. sorry to tell you, it wont get any better and will just lead to more problems. because you have a PCV system, the air born oil is re-introduced back into the intake system. thus going back into the engine and being ignited in the combustion chamber. that in itself will lead to detonation/pre-ignition (pinging). causing the timing to be retarded and exhaust temps to go up. hi exhaust temps lead to premature valve guide wear, burnt exhaust valves & pistons, cracks in the combustion chamber & possibly blown head gasket. if the oil is not competently burnt, then it will eventually destroy the o2/air fuel sensor & catalytic converter as it travels down the exhaust system and ends up coating the trunk & rear bumper of your car.

now im not there & you should have a local mechanic check the car out before a fatal diagnosis is given, or you go out & by an engine. LMK if there is anything else i can help with.

BTW: i ship engines & parts all over the country.

Just in case I need a new engine how much do you have them for and how much to ship to 84128.
