I did a search and found some info on what I was looking for but would like to go in to a little more depth. I know having the filter a certain distance from the MAF sensor will give it a different signal, but could this be damaging? I just bought a pop on cone filter and threw it on the stock arm. It was cheep and it sounds great but I get HORRIBLE gas millage when pushing it. Just wanted your opinions on stock vs the pop-on....right now I'm kinda leaning towards putting the stock one back on....or am I just over thinking things and should leave it on there?
Also is there a certain way to clean the MAF sensor with out damaging it ?

the stock box works best unless you tune for whatever filter/intake you substitute.
CRC MAF cleaner is what I always use.

It's probably a bad idea. See my article on why MAF+intake=bad. Not 100% sure your 97 would be afflicted, but if you're noticing bad changes, then it probably is.

Different setup, but the same process applies:

Be sure to give it a few squirts down the tube... I seem to remember reading that the exposed portion is a temp sensor, and that there is another sensor buried at the top of the tube.
While the stock intake is too quite (I wanna hear the whoooosh damnit!) it works well. Don't fix it unless it's broken, especially when the fix in question causes problems...
