View Full Version : Getting a Harness

I'm looking to get a harness to keep me in place without using the grip of death on the steering wheel. I was hoping some of you could throw a bit of info/advice my way.
I'd be over and done with it if the Schroth Rallye 4 quick release would fit in my car. Sadly 06+ have different setups, and the belt won't fit :(
That leaves me with the Rallye 3 or 4, and my main dilemma comes down to everyday use. I bought the wagon because I transport all sorts of weird large crap from time to time (8 ft table, large RC helicopters, sailplanes, etc.) With the Rallye 3 I can use the C pillar attachment and still fold the seats. With the Rallye 4 not so much... I was thinking I may be able to use the C and D attachements with the Rallye 4, but all the diagrams I've seen say that's a no-no. Would the 4 point add enough functionality over the 3 point to make it worth the hauling hassle?
Thoughts?

Why not get a harness bar and attach a harness to that? That way you can still fold the seats, you will stiffen the chassis, and have a place to mount a camera. They also can me installed and removed in like 15min.

Well, looks like the delimma is a moot point. For some reason it didn't register that the stock 3-point is not removed with the install of the Rallye 4. I can always go back to the regular seatbelt after unclipping the rear straps if I want to fold the seats. Yah!
Regarding the harness bar: I'm not truly sold on the idea. There seems to be a couple of legitamate concerns about how safe they are.

Such as? I have heard nothing but good things.

First and foremost would be to passengers in the rear. Pretty much an automatic 1 passenger limit with a harness bar installed.
After that comes the scenarios that are not so likely to happen: In a collision/impact the stock seat can break long before the harness bar, and you can do some spinal damage. Also mentioned is during a roll you can get pinned by the roof, as you are now kept from moving away from a vertical position. All of the cases I've seen mentioned really only point out the dangers of a harness bar when you do nothing else to the car (i.e. FIA certified seat and rollcage should go hand in hand with the harness bar...)
For me it really boils down to the passenger issue. I'm not willing to go that route when I can get a DOT certified Schroth harness that does the same thing without the inherent problems.

Yeah I know about the rear passenger situation... I just want a harness. I didn't know there was a way to do it without the bar...

This is the setup I'm using for Rallycross:

Schroth Profi II ASM
For a while i was using them everyday, but that just got annoying getting in and out of them to go on short drives to the store, etc. The nice thing about these is the bolt-in kit allows you to retain your factory belts, so i have the option to use regular OEM belts for daily stuff, or the 4 point harnesses (with anti submarine) for spirited driving / competition.
The bolt in kit allows you you to still keep your rear seatbelts, and have passengers in the rear. (you cant use your harnesses and have people in the rear because not only are the harnesses in the way, but the factory bolt points are not designed to hold a two person weight load during impact). So if people want to ride in the back, no biggy, i just push my belts through the front seat and let them sit on the ground in the rear. Passengers then sit in the seat and use the rear factory belts.
I think harness bars are all hype and unnecessary. There are perfectly good bolt in kits available by many manufacturers for all kinds of different configurations (4 point / 5 point / etc.) Personally i think they look overbearing on the inside of a car, and are instant injury for anyone in the back during an accident. OK for people that never have passengers, but if you're hardcore enough to want a harness bar, go for the full cage!
Oh, and also, spend the extra cash to get the quick release camlocks, theyre worth the money for convenience sake.

Sweet, thanks for posting Aaron.
Every time I see mention of Schroths ASM, I can't help but think of the cheesy submarine movies with the german guy yelling "Dive Dive!" It doesn't help matters any that they are a german company

I would expect that it would, all the seatbelt mount points are the same across 04 - 07 models... someone correct me if im wrong.

Hi,
No.
Thanks. :D
They (to my understanding) haven't corrected to mount points, and the 06+ have different mount points. The you = hosed.
While I'm here, I thought I'd ask if anybody has used the "Quick Release" harness' that clip in and out. This is very ideal for me as I'll be using them about 10 minutes every other month or so, but would love to buy some. They eliminate the factory tensioner so are completely manual, so I'm not sure why they would work any less gooder (yes, I did that on purpose. :D )
KTHNX!!

This isn't entirely true. The quick fit/release harness from Schroth is the one with fitment issues in 06+ subarus. Subaru changed the actual buckle size, and the Schroth quick fit is made to fit the older 02-05 sized buckle. If you can get ahold of a pair of 02-05 belts and buckles and swap them in you are good to go.
The Profi II ASM should fit regardless of year, as it is available as a bolt in package (just like the rallye series).

Just to clarify, with the Profi II ASM setup pictured above:
When i indicated "mount points" this was for the Schroth bolt in kit that bolts into the seatbelt mounts on the chassis... not buckling into the seatbelt adaptors.

That's what I get for just looking at one of the descriptions. Hahahaha You are correct, just the QR's are listed as having an issue. :shootsself:

Thank you for all the info, I might just go with the bolt in kit...

The bolt in kit is fantastic if you don't want a bulky harness bar or full roll cage in the car. I like the ability to use my stock seatbelts daily.

That, and you don't have to worry about getting ticketed for messing with your stock seatbelts!
