Has anyone had good/bad experiences with the new 'rex?
Looking to purchase one in a couple months from now so I am doing extensive research. I would figure you rally dudes would know if the new 'rex has got the balls to compete.
Well, lemme know!

It seems like it has the balls with the upgraded suspension and drivetrain. It definately is a huge step in the right direction over the 08. Can't say of any experiences with the new wrx though, not even the 08.

I'll take our first one out Monday for an easy, low stress test drive. Brand new stock unit that someone will be driving home, you know. I have a good private drive with perfect 90degree r-l-r-l turn combination. Serious acceleration will have to wait until my first sale. I always take the customer out one last time so they know what the car is capable of. There's less chance they will try to find out themselves and wrap it around a tree. I need a better helmet-cam to post drives, too. Got a cheap one right now. I'm going to see how it held up at Byron for a co-worker's drags. (nasioc's 0225wrx) If it worked ok and I can figure out how to post it, I'll get it on ASAP.

The one thing I hated about the '08 was the poor throttle response. When combined with the lag, you had to time apexes much earlier instead of concentrating on the entry and exit. Now, when I went through the SPT upgrades, the springs were excluded from the '09. My guess is that all they did is use pink painted SPT springs from the '08 upgrade as stock black units on the '09. I'm waiting to hear from our parts dept for pricing on the rear sway kit for the '09. They had a kit for the '08 NA cars that came right off the WRX.

the 265hp is cool, but I still don't like the look of the car.

@antitarmac:
Thanks for all the input and effort. I would greatly appreciate if you could give me your ideas and information, because you know what you are talking about. Just wondering thou, you are a rep/salesman for SOA? If so, where? Because, I will either be buying this car in seattle, or California (I will be moving down there for college), if either of these, will you be my salesman?!?! haha
But on a more serious note, I really do appreciate all the comments so far. Keep them coming
@04caliwrx:
The car's looks still have some quirks, but its alot better than the 08 imo.
But yeah, the SPT version seems to come with a few extras incl. a sweet exhaust system (I think its turbo-back but not sure).
Oh and one more thing: What do you guys think of a 5 door in Rally Blue? oh and can you trade the rear spoiler for a trunk with no rear spoiler?
Sorry for so many questions, I feel like if there is a time and place to ask them, it would be here and now ;p

I think its closer to ~19-23.
Thanks for that video. It's really hard to find any user created reviews on the 09. I think I am glad I waited to purchase a wrx. I think that now would be the time haha.

well, you might want to wait a couple months, ha. based on teh previous posts-looks like the first few to arrive at a dealer will be well tested by the time you take it home. you probably want to be the one to pop its cherry (so to speak). looks like awdpirates.net has a huge thread on teh 09 as well. the latest subiesport is a good read. good luck, I wil buy it off you in about 5 years maybe.

hahaha u would be lucky to find a well cared for 09 wrx in teh hands of the fast and the furious generation. I take care of my cars till the end. my benzo, was in better condition than a car fresh off the lot and when I sold it i actually got more for it than I purcashed it for =)
I will go pick up subiesport tomorrow on the way home from school tomorrow, and for now I will check out awdpirates.net!
If and when I do buy a 'rex from the dealership, I will custom order one, and take a picture of the 000000 miles, and after proper break in (I heard break in on subies are supposed to be medium to hard?) I will officially pop it's rally cherry, and post up for the Dirty Impreza contest =)
edit: keep the info comin! and thanks to everyone who has contributed so far!

I got to take an 09 WRX sedan around Willow Springs during subiefest just a few weeks ago. This was my first time driving an 09. Overall impressions were very positive. The car is nice, and actually very quiet. However it could really use some coilovers to stiffen up the ride. It's really designed with the grocery getting public in mind. A big fat rear sway bar would be nice too. The power was there (its no STi though) so it was very fun on the straights and powering out of corners... i was just a bit distracted with how much body roll there was. Made it hard to really feel how much i could push it. THen again, i only got one lap in it, so this is based on not a lot of seat time in the sedan.

Coil-overs and sway bars. I also plan on a strut bar, and wider wheels. should help out with handling.
Thanks for the input. so far everything about the car seems positive!

5-door without spoiler isn't available. I love the WRB hatch, but would rather have a red with goldies, myself. Wife wants the WRB with goldies. Yeah, I'm a Madison WI sales rep, but first and foremost, I'm a lifelong Suby owner. I'll dig around for old pics to post sometime. Goodridge lines are available for the car already. Might be money better spent rather than strut bars. Either that or a chassis brace.

Check this out www.americancanoe.org (http://www.americancanoe.org) and go to the Subaru VIP section. It'll save you heaps of $$ and make the purchase much easier for everybody. All for $40!! Have to be a member for at least 6 mos. though. The sheet that says you're certified for the purchase when your 6 mos. anniversary arrives says you only have 30 days to buy, but you just call them and have them resend a new sheet. Allocation begins the first week of every month. If you miss that week, your order gets pushed back another 30 days. Happy hunting!!

hmmm 6th months... I wonder if it would be good to wait that long. I dont have a car right now, but the problem would be what am I going to take to college... well. I suppose if I sign up its 40 bucks spent that will become useful some time down the road.
Thanks for the advice!
oh and btw I was talking about the sedan version. the rep at the local subaru said he was not sure if it was even coming out in a 5 door. silly rep haha.
edit the 5 door hatch is SHEXIII

Suddenly, getting orders for '09 WRXs, all sedans. Makes sense since it's what was wanted in the STI so badly. New hp bump so close to STI without the $$$. Also just installed stock '09 STI rear sway/links/brackets on wife's '08 2.5i hatch. Took 30min on my back in our parking lot. HUGE improvement since 2.5i's don't have rear sway. Scared the crap out of 2 co-workers Sat demonstrating the improvements.:lol2:

We will see.

Tough choice.
Just read yesterday at www.motortrend.com they got 4.8sec. 0-60mph from the '09 WRX and a tenth second slower than the '08 STI in the quarter. Must have had SPT exhaust, though.

Drove a sedan w/SPT exhaust back from the Madison dealers auto show in snow with the stock tires. Not particularly fun, but it sure turned heads when I got the rear out in every little corner. Some sob swiped the key during setup at the show, so the car gets to stay inside until sold, now.

Totally different animal from previous versions, no? I love the old STIs, but it just seems like this car has more potential for scary fast than the old cars. You can take it farther into corners and push the limits out a little farther. Have yet to get one off the ground, though. Couldn't do that at Moroso and the boss seems to frown on that. Guess I'll have to wait 1yr-8mos till I get mine.:-(

I love my 2009! It has amazing power, and seems to be built like a tank. It has a really interesting transmission whine in first and second, pretty sure its normal. When you first start it up cold there is an emission air pump that sounds like the engine knocking, it was not a good first experience.. From what I understand it makes the engine warm up faster?
The interior has a few rattles, but any committed owner can easily hunt them down. Sometimes the clutch makes a weird chirping sound, and there is a slight clunk about 10 feet after I first start driving, I think its something in the drivetrain engaging. But so far, no major complaints!
Coming from a 1998 Honda Prelude Type SH lowered on coil overs, the handling and power was interesting to get used to. The handling of these cars is less about the "line" of the road, and more about just powering through turns, practically sliding. Casual shifting in this car is just as fast as hard driving in the Prelude. It seems to understeer until you push the car a little more, then it oversteers just right. I'd like to get a rear sway bar to make it kick into oversteer a little easier. Over bumps on the street it seems a little wonky sometimes, like the side under more weight pulls to the outside? I thought this was really weird at first, but I assume its to help pull the back of the car around when pushing it around turns.
The interior is exactly what I like, simple, clean, and to the point, just like the Prelude was. Nothing special, but no complaints either. The seats are nice after a small modification..
The power is just astonishing, it just feels like it effortlessly pulls you to the speed you want. Cruising at 75 is perfect at 3,000 RPMS, no need to downshift. I'm pretty excited to try stage 2, but I feel like it would be a lot safer after I tighten up the suspension a little first. Not really sure what direction I want to go with the car yet anyways.

I love mine, tons of power for a stock car, under steer and body lean are a bit much and since the stock dampers are maxed out with the springs it comes with the fix isn’t as easy as popping on a new set of springs.
Since the shock travel is already short and most reasonably prices coilovers sacrifice even more of that precious travel I am waiting for the RCE/Bilstein fixed perch shocks to come out in January valved specifically for the RCE blacks (or yellows if you so choose).
Think I will combine this with a set of adjustable sways and end links. As for power, the plan is to get an AP tune here in town, should be able to get 270+-whp and 300ftlbs at the wheels without changing anything other than the map, and keeping boost under 18lbs at that. A set of light wheels with r compound, a set of strong wheels with rally tires and I will be ready for auto/rally cross and DD.
Will it be perfect for either, no, will it be decent to pretty good for both, I think so, and that’s what I am looking for.
Now, if I could just get a tow hitch, snowplow and camper for it I could do everything...
