My friend and I were bored, so we decided to do a little hack job on my stock axleback to see what kind of sound we could get out of it.
First we opened up the casing.

We proceeded to hack out most of the innards, with not much of an idea how big a difference there would be.

We figured that should be plenty for now... So we closed it back up...

Threw it on the car and fired it up.
So far, its a little bit louder than an STi axleback. I'm a little surprised its not louder than that, but we didnt cut the baffle walls at all, so can't expect too much volume. It's certainly louder than stock, and doesn't sound bad. It produced a nice agressive oem noise for now, just beyond the STi muffler.
Not a spectacular project, but something to do on a boring day :)
I don't have any videos yet, I'll try to get some next weekend.

I did this to my car about a month after I got it. I cut open the casing and just kept the black part (the one that goes to the exit/exhaust tip) and rewelded it onto the tube that enters the muffler. It ended up shortening the whole setup but I added another piece to bring the end out to the bumper. Mine is pretty loud.

It ended up being pretty low profile too.

My exhaust job was similar...kinda. I drilled a hole in mine between the two pipes, then rammed a 2" prybar through all the baffles, then welded the hole closed with a plate...its...very loud growling boxer type exhaust, basically its a resonated straight pipe. Speaking of which, I got pilled over yesterday for having a loud car and the cop told me to wash my car while he was giving me my ever so thankful pink warning slip.

that is cool I did the same thing but did not cut the main exit tube and the vertical supports but everything else went and it makes a small difference.

Hoping to do this next week to my rex sometime. Did you just use a grinder to open the muffler?

I just cut the muffler off and ran a straight pipe out the back.
Sounds about like that,no where near as loud as I thought it was gonna be.

How does that sound? I'm contemplating doing the same, just having the local mufflershop make up a straight pipe axleback... (main reason being the bolts are rusted to the point I cant get them out)

How does this effect back pressure and gas mileage?

In wrx's, or other turbo models, it doesn't affect the back pressure. Straight pipe it or just hacking the stock muffler, it doesn't matter. The turbo is what maintains back pressure. n/a cars are different story...as I'm sure you can guess :). As far as gas mileage goes, it doesn't help or hurt it....well maybe it helps it, but I doubt it's significant enough to be noticeable.

its not the backpressure on NA cars that you need to worry about, its the exhaust gas velocity.
and something like this wouldnt be an issue for an NA car, and if it effected power at all, it would be a minimal effect.
