View Full Version : Forming A Team

Gorman ridge was the first real rally experience i've ever had. In the spur of the moment two friends and I wanted to creat a rally team. A team consisting of the young hopefuls that have noone that could guide them through the rally culture. For now we've decided on the rally name "ALL TRACK RALLY" with a set of rules...
#1: keep it legal
#2: safety first
#3: be safe!

Thats about it... if anyone is interested in joining this team. pm me or just reply. we plan on having many events and camping trips. we'll have monthly meetings online and offline. My friends and I are working on a logo.. i'm open to any ideas for a great logo. acronym ATR or w/e... after the logo, stickers, then shirts, then small cheap parts. (I woulda asked 505 if i could get in on what they are doing but they are on a whole other league!)

p.s. is there anything i need to know about forming a team? sponsorship? how to pit? how to organize things? any words of wisdom from anyone would be very appreciated.

Noone apart from the 500 or so rally nuts on this forum anyway :D

Forming a team: I think you did it already.
How to pit: Park cars in a row in the pit area
How to organise things: I've found Google docs to be very handy
Sponsorship: You have to prove value to potential sponsors, so concentrate on getting out there and getting some events under your belt first. And by events I mean rallyx, unless you have a ton of dough to drop on buying/building a rally car.

FWIW the name might be a little confusing, cos rallies are not held on tracks, and it sounds like "All-Trac" which was a Celica.

I have a friend who has a company called all-trac and he gets that confusion as well

I would run a season of rally-x events before you drop serious money on an actual rallying team. there are plenty of people both on here and at rally-x events that can give you any advice you need and will (usually) go out of their way to help you, even when it comes to modding or fixing your car

well, since this is in the rallyx prep, i'll assume that is where you are planning to start, which is a good thing. are you planning to transition to rally then?

this forum is full of people in your situation or at least very similar, or that were there. you should be able to find some good stories by reading through the member journals of those who have done it, or by reading through the preparation subforums.

that name is definitely confusing. why not just hold your practice events with the DI members here? the more people you have, the more people you can learn from. if a few of you become serious enough to seek out sponsorship, that can be done at the rallycross level...but you have to prove that you will get your sponsors some good exposure.

I'll start reading journals. Maybe i'll buy a book from barn n nobles.. I will try to go to as many DI events as i can.. im not tryna make the team grow up super fast, i know things would take a couple of years before people out of the CITY would know the name... so i will keep the whole team thing on the DL. for now i'll keep learning while trailing along side with DI and you guys. thanks for the info. i really appreciate it!:guitarist:

p.s. as far as the name goes.. i hope i dont get sued, the name is subject to change. I'm open to any opinions.

keep attending rallies, and better yet, volunteer as a marshall and if you can, work in a pit crew...both should help you learn a lot about what is involved. you can read quite a bit of information, but you'll learn a lot more by being there. then supplement what you have learned in person by reading.

Not to bash your team ambitions too much, but come out to the next rallycross with us! You'll see that all the DI people pretty much act as a team when we're there (helping each other out, swapping advice about the course, sharing tools...)

Buying books is great and all, but actually going out and racing / helping at events will get you closer to where you want to be.

+1 The experience you get from going and being part of the event is leaps and bounds more helpful than any amount of reading you can do.

its ok. we're not getting our hopes up.. we still have no idea on what we're doing. but its all a learning experience. i do want to roll with you guys.. but i dont think u guys would take me seriously when i roll in with my stock subie.. well it does have minor suspension parts. and at gorman.. well it seemed like you guys were so busy in the pits and there were more than enough people out there. i did observe for a while (with sooo much excitment), but then i felt that i was getting in the way since i had to move around a bit because of people sayin EXCUSE ME!!!! so yea.. i just left the area and felt how it was like to drive on dirt. hopefuly next time i could do more than just watch, but no real team wants a noob to be touching their tools.

And about the name change!: we are now called Cesspool Rally

Dude.

Seriously.

There's no egos here. We don't care what you drive. You could show up in a Yugo and people would still welcome you. In fact we'd be like, awesome, no way, a rally Yugo!

At Gorman we had more than enough people in the pits, yes, and tbh most of us were guessing as we went along anyway. It was difficult not to be in the way, even when you did have a task to complete. So that isn't a big surprise.

You're overthinking it. It's no big thing.

hell, I felt like I was in the way as soon as I got out of the car.....I forget who, but I was doing some stuff in the car just as we pulled into service, someone (Loren? Albert?) tapped me on the shoulder and was like, "hey, we need to jack up the car, are you getting out or not?"

Seems like being concerned with starting a team is jumping the gun a bit. No one cares that you are a newb, most of us are. It doesn't matter that your car is stock, it's not like we are all rolling around with prepped rally cars or anything like that.

Get involved with some local events, be it rally or rallyx, I seriously doubt that anyone is going to turn down a helping hand. Even things as simple as showing up early and leaving late at a rallyx to help setup/tear-down the course is greatly appreciated. I have yet to meet a bad nut amongst the people I've met at the Dirty Meets, Glen Helen, and the R4 events, so don't worry about getting bashed on.

I think we all felt like we were in the way at Gorman at one point or another. There were only a couple of people there who had previous experience, the rest of us were rank amateurs. And yes Jon, that was me

It's all about getting as much seat time as you can, and having a lot of fun. Get as involved as you'd like with local events and take it from there. Are you coming out to Glen Helen III? We could use some help (click me!) (http://dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6137), and I can guarantee you'll have a blast!

i'd love to come to glen hellen iii. going depends on if i can get passed smog illegaly cheap.. because i found a place that could do it for $150.. if i do pay the $150, i wont be financialy stable enough to go to GHIII.... i have till the end of the month. the previous owner sold me a lemon. ty for the feed back btw.

#1 check engine light doesn't turn on when it's supposed to (at start up)

#2 the mech(mechanic) says that my egr valve isnt working... but he can't point out where the EGR valve is. i did make a post about this erlier, i did get replies.. but still no luck on finding this valve.. i have an EJ251. i literaly need someone to point out this EGR valve. or atleast take a picture of the valve on the motor.

But i can tell you exactly what part of the smog im not passing:
#1check engine light.
#2 MEAS(750rpm)
MEAS(725rpm): 200 AVE:17
I passed the rest of the test with flying colors.

I find this test to be extremly odd because i have a smog test result from 5 months ago and that test passed with flying colors. MEAS being only 19!!!! and the check engine light supposably worked..
So how would i go about fixing this MEAS problem?
Things i've already done:
-New spark plugs
-New spark plug wires
-Clean the MAF
-Clean the spark plug wire distributor (was pretty corroded).

scoot, you may want to re-post that information in one of our technical forums to really narrow down the problem. Hopefully you can get that all sorted out before GH. But even if you cant id suggest coming out to spectate and even get some ride alongs!

ONOES!!! We're more intimidating than we thought, how to fix that? But yea, stock subies are good cars, what matters more is the driver and his willingness to learn.

Sometimes I wish I was out there on the left coast to participate in the shenanigans going on. Gorman Rally looked awesome by way of picture/video. Just a tad jealous.

Was the car cold? Fill the tank with premium the fill-up before you get the car checked. Then, right before the check, drive the car hard and come itno the station hot. That will help with the emissions. The electrical issues will have to be sorted out separately. Do you have a tune? Is it possible the tuner turned off the CEL for the EGR?

So if i come down from MT and compete with you guys, would i have to pass a smog test? we don't have smog tests here in montana(:headbang: I know it rocks for us), but i know some groups make you have them anyway to compete!

The laws are such that the car needs to be legal for the state/county it is registered in. For RallyX, the rules just state what can and can't be done to the car, but not about emissions levels.
