i am trying to find a non-viscous, non-clutch pack LSD. so, this leaves me with the option of a TorSen/Helical LSD.

i know that Cusco has a clutch pack LSD - strike #1.

i'd rather not use the factory vLSD - strike #2.

Quaife has a torsen (helical) LSD - its damned damned expensive ($1300) - i gonna get this.

has anyone found anything even remotely similar, for a bit better price new?

why no clutch?

i've just read bad reviews of the Quaife.

clutch packs wear out and need some rather expensive replacement.

Quaife (helical/torsen) LSDs are gear based and have a lifetime warranty.

i have to read some reviews of Quaife LSDs - havent done so yet. do you know of any other manufacturers that make torsen/helical LSDs?

Don't torsen diffs go open when one wheel is unable to deliver torque?

from my reading, the torsen diffs transfer power to the tire with the least grip. but, i might have mis-read or mis-understood it...

so, feel free to read thru it. :)

Get a torsen type2, we were playing with them in the RIT FSAE car and it seemed to deliver power way more evenly. Although, I think we custom ordered the gearing inside soooooo that may be a bit puhricy.

I knew I remebered reading about the torsen diff here... found the thread. Erik from L and E fabrication gave out some really good info here (http://dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1643&highlight=TORSEN). Barrett's posts are full of good info too.

thanks for the link/info lorenkb. :) thats a LOT of info...

with my driving (99% street), getting a clutch type isnt necessary as i dont get airborne. :) i REALLY dont ever see my tires ever leaving the ground in this RS...

so, yeah. i'm looking to get a torsen LSD...

Peloquin makes Quaife-like LSDs. At least in the VW world they do.

i contacted Torsen. they do not offer any LSD for the RS.

strange that Quaife does, but Torsen does not... but, it IS a torsen type lsd...

wtf?

anywho...

the Quaife Torsen LSD for the Impreza AWD and the WRX are the exact same part number. i know they both use the R160 rear end. does this also mean the diffs, are in fact, identical?

if so, i know the next question that i'll be asking.

ok, dumb question.

will any R160 diff fit work with any R160 housing?

i'm curious if any year WRX rear diff would work with my RS rear housing.

Yes it will fit in the pumpkin or you can do what I did and just use a complete unit out off a wrx and just change the studs on the cover. Though you will have to get the matching trans starter clutch and flywheel.

I must say with set up on my RS it has made the car lots of fun and a bit tail happy in the wet or loose. Plus the longer gears seem to work wonders with the NA power band. Nothing like reaching 110 and then shifting into a new gear that drops the revs right into the meat of the power band. Shocks the hell out of some of my BMW owning co-workers.

Side tracked sorry. Actually in the dry under lets say clover leaf type of exit ramps conditions accelerating wide open. It will lay power down so hard and even you can feel the outside corner of the rear tremble and try to break loose.

As for the Quaife units. They are strange, they lay power down very nice and even, but I've had them do strange things when getting a FWD VW on a trailer. It acted almost like a open diff when getting it onto a wet ramps on multiple occasions. Shot one ramp right off the trailer and did nothing on the other side. Least until the ramp was cleared from under the tire with power, then it tread to bunny hop the front end of my Scirocco up onto the trailer. Really funny, but way to early on a Sunday morning for that kind of drama.

Don't know if any of that helps or not.

Time to revive a thread-

my version 6 STi RA came from the factory with a "Suretrac" front LSD, which from everything i've read is just another name for Torsen/Helical. When one wheel is in the air, it slips. Everybody will tell you that.
I've had problems with wheelspin on the inside tire during HAAAARD, high-g, high-speed turns on dry pavement- so essentially pulling most of the weight off the inside tire (i'm running stock shocks still, and they allow a bunch of body roll).

Something i've read to help counter this, and i will try as soon as my car is out of the shop, is to LFB when a wheel starts to slip. The slight resistance of the brakes on that slipping axle will get the LSD to once again work.

Is this true?
