Are you after actual performance gains or do you just want it for the sound?

Exhaust by itself isn't going to do much of anything other than the noise factor. Turbo-back + engine management will. Cobb stage 2 is always an easy starting point, but certainly isn't the only engine management route. Find out what your local tuning shops are experienced with and go from there.
I've been wanting to do the same thing for a long time (I hate having a silent car) but honestly the money isn't worth it at this point. Money spent on tires and event fees will go a lot farther, so for me the first major mod involves the crappy driver.

Yea there aren't any tuning shops out here that i know of, thats why i was going the easy tuning route this time around.

i would but im in the process of moving, so a trip some where is out of the question. besides i have the concept of rally control down and i don't plan on competing anytime soon but thanks for the opinion none the less. oh and the lump is much bigger i can only see spending 1500 of it right now on my car. Anybody else???? i need ya'lls input. i know somebody on here can lead me in the right direction.

i would seriously suggest going with the cheapest exhaust system you can find, and stick to like 2 1/2" exhaust. anythign bigger blinger will not help you at all
on my other REX I had a muffler shop fab me up a one piece down pipe allthe way to the back and the car had a non brand frkn muffler that sounded nice so i kept it
check the journal sedan to wrx i have a sound clip and pics of it.

you could probably find a used STi catback pretty cheap, but it will still be fairly quiet. when you're ready for EM, then you can drop in a DP.
personally, i'd go for a second set of wheels and tires first, so that you can have a tarmac set and an off-road set. of course, where i live, my off-road set is also my winter set which you don't need. i'd also go for any protection that would be helpful for the off-roading you do...skid plate, etc. then i'd look at suspension.
but for power, you're going to get a lot farther with EM. that will let you get more out of parts you install, and more safely. you could do the exhaust at the same time...if you only want to spend 1.5k, then try to find a used exhaust plus a Cobb AP (i only suggest the AP b/c you can use OTS maps with a basically stock car, and you said there are no tuners near you).

oh i'll need winter tires, the winters in santa fe nm are pretty brutal. Its not like a "desert" like in az. its more like where the desert meets the forest
