Well first off I am new to DirtyImpreza.com but I love Subarus. I however do not own a Subaru as I am only 16 at the moment. I'm looking forward to buying a Subaru next summer. Only thing is, is that I don't know what to choose. I know that the WRXs and STis have EXTREME amounts of power so I don't want to kill myself...Just yet :D But anyone with any suggestions throw'em at me

A good ole RS or 2.5i will do you just fine, and keep you very safe. Good to know that you are honest enough with yourself to know not to get a WRX or STi just yet.

wow, i like you already...i personaly like the 00-01 2.5rs
now, if you are going to pay for your own insurance the wagon for some reason (even wrx) is rated "safer" (even though it's got the same amount of power) and it's ALOT cheaper to insure a wagon then a sedan and defenatly a coup.

thats how i started my suby journey. get an impreza rs 5 speed and thus the journey begins. Just evolve along the years. good job deciding you aren't ready for the turbo. Baby steps and training wheels are great cause subys handle unlike any other car.

Yea I'm just really enthused about going to these DirtyMeets you guys have and just hang out with fellow Subie fans. And yea I don't need anything big because I have seen to much arrogant people my age with STis and WRXs just going out thinking they can control but eventually lose it and possibly there lives. Thats why I want to start low. The 99-01 2.5RS is my main choice as of now. But I wouldn't mind 2002-2005 base model impreza 2.5i

The 00-01 RS is a great choice! The nice thing about subarus is that most of the parts are interchangeable so if more power is what you want down the road. A motor swap is a very common modification. Need a little power? WRX swap, MORE POWER? STi swap!
Its best to start within your means too. STi's aren't cheap and insurance for a 16 year old, i dont even want to know how much that would be. One thing is for sure, you dont want to end up like this guy:

yeah, you dont need a turbo to love a Subie, just carry a tow line in your trunk so you can pull your friends mustang out of a ditch and you will get a very warm feeling inside:p
and when you get offroad and no one can keep up with you
btw, wagons dont have fold down seats just for carrying groceries;)

I love my 01 2.5Rs, its cheaper than the WRX (also slower) but if you are planning on RallyXing it you can still be competitive. The L is cheaper yet and still badass IMO, check out Notallthere and his build, makes me wish i got an L!!

I like the power in the 2.5rs' its a good blend, especially for someone your age, considering insurance and practicality. Don't get me wrong, I would love a wrx...but those 2.5's are relatively quick and fun! Legacy's aren't a bad choice either...neither are celica's :p

Yea the only thing is, is that I'm having issues even finding any sort of Subaru other than WRX's and STis. If I could find a 2.5i possibly 2004-2007 for really cheap I would be stoked...or an RS for under $5000 but its so hard to find one in my area...

As much as I love Subarus I have no clue what an L is :( I am learning though. Just need to keep studying the subies. Oh and what year of an "L" *sorry for my newbness* would you prefer?

Impreza L. Mid to late nineties, usually.. like this one:

Did you want to keep it reasonably low-cost, price and insurance wise? Seems like an Outback Sport (OBS) or something might be a good option. They aren't fast at all, but they handle great and they've done very well in competition round here against much, much more powerful machinery. Quite a few came in MT, and you can haul a load of stuff with them. And wagons rule :D

. And wagons rule :D
+1
I have a '96 impreza L wagon (2.2 litre) and its a blast, i'm relativley competitive at rallyX and its just a lot of fun.
you can find an old GC ('93-'01 sedan) or GF ('93-'01 wagon) for pretty cheap (under $5k) and still have a blast.
good to see someone who knows that ~300hp is too much for a first car! :guitarist:
good luck with whatever you choose!

wagons are pretty awesome so much that you can do with them. plus its awesome to kick peoples asses offroad or on road in a wagon :)

Ok well I went onto Craigslist.com and I found a decent 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo. I love the body style and the looks just hate the fact its not an Impreza due to the site is a Dirty Impreza site but hey. A dirty legacy won't be bad eh? Especially a $1500 one http://boulder.craigslist.org/car/741925432.html

Rock on! Yeah nobody cares what you drive really (hell look at my collection :D).
In fact there's a DI member with a car very similar to that one:
http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3745
(okay not exactly similar but you see what I mean)
That car looks pretty cool, and what a deal. Big exhaust raises questions as to what else has been done to it - finding constant weird PO stuff can take the shine off it. Run a VIN check on it as well, of course.
But assuming it's okay, you'd have a sweet car for very little cash and a little bit of effort (and a bit more cash). Would you be doing the work on it yourself?
btw, Colin McRae's first year in WRC was driving a 1993 Legacy turbo sedan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:LEGACY_RS.jpg).. if you want rally/dirt pedigree, there it is, in spades...

I would try to work on my own car but with help. Kinda like with that Legacy or a similar one I found (1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo) If i bought an exhaust system swaybar and such I'd just try getting help from you guys and watch and learn very carefully at what you guys do...here is the other 1993 Subaru legacy Turbo. http://boulder.craigslist.org/car/742940896.html

I personally would go for the black one. The new clutch probably would be somewhere around $300 (total shot in the dark, someone correct me), but still an awesome car for an amazing price. If I lived out in Boulder I would try to pick that car up right away, or at least know some friends who would.

My first car a 1994 Legacy GT with a 2.2 in it. She ran until 249k until the computer died. She is still around because my third car (after a POS Olds 88) was a 1993 Legacy L. The 93 has 191k on her and still running and I still drive her. In fact she is my rallyx machine. Personally, I had less problems in the 80k plus miles I drove with both of those cars then I have in the 10k I have had with my 03 WRX.
If you can find one I would suggest buying it. They are cheap and easy to fix. Not to mention they can go anywhere you want them to. Insurance wasn't bad either. I was paying 900 a year... In Mass.
Good luck finding something. I'm sure you will be very happy with whatever you buy.

hey steve!
on another note, if you have deep pockets you could always pull off another "Ugly Panda" method by searching craigslist for a $400 legacy and then upgrading parts. You would really get to know the workings of subaru cars that way however it would be a lemon (spend more money on fixing then the cost of the car).
similar to SReitsma, I'm in college and drive a 2000 Outback. Insurance is cheaper, it's safe, less power, and a blast to drive.

hey man, definatley get a gc.
The Ls have far inferior suspension compared to the RS, and that makes the car IMO.
Just dont get the swap bug like I did.(im 16)

I'm most likely going with the black 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo for $1500. I have friends up near Boulder and they are going to pick it up and bring it down to me if I do in fact buy it.

Thanks for catching that little piece of a message. It would be awesome if I could get him to drop it to about $1000. Hopefully he doesn't sell it for awhile. Like 1 or 2 months. Need to get a bit of money.

I hate to say this but those cars go fast. Someone that knows what that is will snatch that up quickly. But you never know it might still be there.
