View Full Version : horrible noise

i went through some sweet mud today up in flagstaff and after a few runs though the puddles my car started making a horrible scraping/squeak noise it was comming from the left front wheel area.

this has happened one other time before and i couldnt figure out what it was. i thought maybe it was a rock that got stuck inbetween the disk brake and the protector or something. after driving for a while and thinking it was just that it finally went away.

well it did it again today. after it squeaked i drove down the dirt road to find a hard flat spot out of the way of traffic to lift the car and take off the wheel and inspect it. before i could even find a spot it just quit.

i have had the cv boot replaced on that wheel once very recently by the dealership. other than that its still stock from the day i bought it. it doesnt do that noise after i drive though huge puddles of water on the street but when i drive on the street normally the right side is deeper in the water than the left.

any ideas of what it could be?

btw here is a video of me playing in the pit.

i love having fun...anyway i'm not too sure about it but i just had a problem with my FR wheel bearing..and the hub got fused to the bearing so that was an extra 180 right there so i would sugest for the sake of not spending too much money to go check out that bearing...

good luck

we get cars all the time with rocks between the rotor and the backing plate, dont know why subarus do this but they all seem to. if it was a bearing the noise would be constant for the most part and more of a rumble.

Agreed.. there's a rock stuck in there somewhere. You keep knocking it free and then it gets back into a squeaking position. Next time, if you're in a safe place try reversing and slamming on the brakes, that often dislodges it. Or take the wheel off and poke at it or hit it with some compressed air or something.

haha.. remove the backing plate.. and keep it off... what would that do? i mean i think i coulda kept them off the jeep.. cause it was just a thin piece of sheet metal..hmmm

rather keep it on just incase kinda thing you know. not as much crap flings up and hits the back of the rotor then.

thats what i was thinking with it being the same wheel twice... idk how it gets pushed back away though cause it just stops. i was woundering if maybe the water pushed the oil back or something and it just had to work its way back in?

how often should i repair or what ever i need to do to my berrings?

the bearings are sealed, you dont need any service done to them until they go out.

+1 on crap stuck between the rotor and backing plate

happens to me all the time. sounds like metal scraping or a pebble jumping around inside a tin can.

just drive backwards and slam on the brakes.

yes but they still go bad.

a rock stuck sounds more reasonable
