View Full Version : Oil Cooler vs high-cap pan vs baffles

Ok- i just fuxor'd my motor, and i want to rebuild it right.
my options/ideas:
1) ARC Oil Pan... It is higher capacity and has a nice baffle in it. Like $450+, but everybody raves about it. I'm not sure if my Primitive skid plate will clear it, but i can check on The Wrath of Khan's car- he has this pan...
2) Oil Cooler... they add some capacity, and actually lower the temps effectively... but don't they also lower oil pressure? Would the 12mm STi oil pump help that?
3) Cosworth Oil Pan Baffle.... This little number is like $300 or something, and i honestly don't see how it would be very effective, since it doesn't stick down into the pan hardly at all. Might just be my EJ noobness showing, but somebody throw me a bone here.
there is also a Tomei Baffle Stiffener which looks nice, and it is also $300something. Once again, i don't know how this could help much, since it is an insert between the block and the pan, and doesn't hang down much.
Any other reccomendations?

stock oil pan (at least for a WRX) actually has pretty decent baffling.

IIRC he has a V5 or 6 JDM WRX...JDM EJ20 has the same pan, just notched for EL headers....

my headers are def not equal length.
Oil starvation/screwing up bearings seems to be the culprit at this point, but haven't torn it down yet.
I do a LOT of high speed touge runs w/ high grip tires and stock suspension, so the car leans and pitches a lot, which leads me to believe that a good pan would be a good investment....

Notta problem. I forgot the EL didnt start till the EJ207 in the V7 IIRC.....get it torn down and find the issue, then address it the way you see fit...PM me or update this thread with what you found, and I will give my input....

isnt there a system to prevent oil starvation? i forget what its called, mostly used for tarmac raceing.
basicly a small oil "bottle" and a pump for it to make sure that theres always oil to feed the pump

A dry sump is the way to go, if you have the dough.

i'd love to hear what this thread turns up...i've been thinking about various mods for my STi, which seems to absolutely drink oil.

man i don't want to try building my own dry-sump system. I don't have the dough (at the moment) to do a $400 pan and a $400+ cooler....
I'll try and source one or the other for a decent price, and get the other before too long.
Does anybody have reccomendations for a good/strong/upgraded Oil pump?

i'm going to be checking with subaru and/or my mechanic if my EJ207 came standard with the 12mm or what- we believe it quite possibly did. Either way, i will go w/ the 12mm.
I am probably going to see if i can put together a good oil cooler setup, and wait for a deal on the ARC pan like The Wrath Of Khan got.
I'll be dropping the car off this weekend, i'll keep everybody updated w/ pics and info
