I was pointed over to the Rally America website during one of my many calls to Barrett about legal class requirements. He mentioned the development of a more "open" PGT class being developed by RA, that may be offered only at the National level.
This class is interesting as it will allow people do some of the restricted modifications that currently are not allowed in PGT. (6speed gearbox, upgraded brakes, alternate radiators, hydraulic handbrake...)
Very interesting stuff. I'm definitely interested in how this is going to turnout. As of now, they said 2 weeks ago things were being finalized, but have yet to see an update posted on the RA site.
Heres the jist:
Class philosophy: To make currently produced vehicles viable and encourage the use of later model cars from more manufacturers in a limited modification class. The same eligibility / prep rules as PGT except:
34mm restrictor.
Alternate brake OK (limited to max 4 piston calipers and iron rotors), Hydraulic E brake, prop valve, and alternate hyd. configuration OK.
STI 6 speed synchro gear boxes and STI rear diff OK for GD bodied (non STI) WRX.
Alternate (water) radiators OK.
Alternate inlet hoses (including Y pipes) OK.
No VIN limitations, but model year declared and specific minimum weights per vehicle. model will be specified.
Rationale:
We need a Production type class that more manufacturers, especially Mitsubishi, can compete in. We need to have a Mitsubishi vs Subaru war, without cost spiraling out of control.
In my opinion, there is some pent up demand to run the Mitsubishi EVO, and STI in a production based “limited class”. The only non-GD entries in National PGT competition this year has been by a GH bodied STI (twice). Even the new GH bodied WRX (2008) won’t accept 15” wheels without brake modifications.
All current PGT cars will still be legal for 4WD Limited.
Replace the “political” 32mm restrictor size, (which was instituted to assure PGT cars were not faster than Group N cars) with 34mm.
Weight rules replace the VIN rule, so the advantage of mixing / matching body shells in negated.
Proposed name for the new 4WD limited class: FX, for “Factory Extreme”, or “Factory Experimental”.
