so i am planning on creating my own front bumper guard.. on tat goes from the side of my car all the way to the other side of my car across the bottom with a skid plate attached... thinking about making it a light bar too.. so i would have one inch tubing running along the entire front of my front bumper, with a light bar area in front of the grill..
so..
i think i will need...
about 10ft 1 inch steel tubing(or should i do aluminum??, or somehting else??)
four 120 degree 1inch tubing bends(or should i just use two and make the bar come out of the one on the bottom of the bumper..
and like 3ftx3ft to make the skid plate with 1/4 inch aluminum.
please help me
thanks
ryan~

all i can say is if your going to be really involved in rallying i would try to loose the need of making every thing look nice, my plastic welder is on back order but once i finally get the thing ill post a thread on how to plastic weld so that if you do crakc a bumper (all subaru bumpers ive come across are plastic) you can weld it up and you wont even know its there if you paint it. but like on mine i have a few cracks but its not painted so you cant even tell its been cracked about 50 times.

There's a trick for that, but you need to make a flat smooth surface in exactly the same profile as the area of the crack. You basically press that against the crack, heat/melt the material around the crack, and press it against said smooth surface. you reeeeaaaly have to get that surface right, though. I've only ever done it on smooth undertrays, and one glovebox hinge.
If you can get some one to let you make a clay cast of that region of their bumper..... :)

very much like these.. but over the bumper instead of replacing it, and it wont slope down at the end.. just straight across the bottom!

Banged this out yesterday, took an afternoon with a bender and a welder:

The hardest part for you will probably be finding mount points. My skidplate is 1/4" thick 5000 aluminum, I just drilled and tapped my mount holes in it. You'll need to find sometign solid down there to bolt to.

If you're doing the welding go with steel because Aluminum is a bitch to weld (unless you know how to weld Al). Welding aluminum is like, okay its getting hot... getting hot... OH WTF ITS GONE. I sucked at welding aluminum, but steel is a breeze.

na way back. just place aluminum tape over the crack and v groove it out then just heat up your plastic welder and fill the crack in with the correct plastic rod (much like a hot glue gun) than do the same on the front side you wont loose the surface design then just grind it down smooth and cover it with easy sand then sand the easy sand like you would bondo. seamless id have to point out where the crack was its that invisible. ive been wanting to do a diy post on that for the longest time but my plastic welder is on back order:pissed: but hopefully soon i can do that. anyway good luck with the bumper guard. kinda got a little off track

I have a bugeye wagon with Forester struts....I've often pondered bumper replacement with a tube bumper and possibly doing something neat with regard to the headlights....
I'm afraid of how much it'll cost to do it right, however.

This is robably not the closest shop to you but when I made my skidplate they were helpful:
Metal Craft Warehouse
1806 Enterprise Blvd
West Sacramento, CA
(916) 374-9003
I gave them a drawing and they were able to cut a piece of aluminum to the correct size and shape (angles and everything). I think it ended up costing about $50. They don’t bend or weld material but you could probably get the tubing there as well.

I'm a WABO certified welder here in Washington State. If any of you locally would like anything done I will do it for a reasonable price.

cool, I've been thinking about making my own brush guard/ deer killer for winter time. Is there a good place to mount one on the underside frame? post some pics if you get one together.

I was thinking of this a few months ago and you have the exact idea as me.. a bar that runs along the bottom of the bumper so that when you drag the front of your car it scrapes the bar and not the bumper.. I was thinking about running two support bars up in front of the radiator and connecting it to the metal piece that is right in front of the top of the radiator. Is this a good idea? anyone?

Today I drove into a plastic jump for bikes  So now I really want a bumper guard. I am going to have my friend make one and hopefully it will be similar to newbie101's.
