View Full Version : Proper Rally-Style Window Name Placement?

OK, so my window names are on the way. Now I just need to figure out how to put them on.

1) I've heard driver on top on both sides, and driver on top on drivers/codriver on top on passengers. Which is right?

2) Flags before the name (FLAG T. Williams) or after the name (T. Williams FLAG) or upwind on both sides? Most seem to do it flag before, but SWRT seems to do it flag after.

Names:
Driver side = Driver name on top, co driver below
Passenger side = Co driver on top, driver on bottom
Flags towards the B-pillar.

It might be according to whichever sanctioning body you are competing in that decides how names and flags go. On the WRC cars i only see a huge "SOLBERG" on the driver side...

I just did a search on flickr for "wrc". Seems like it's ALWAYS person on that side of the car on top, but the flags are whatever the people feel like. 90% of the time, it looks like flags before name, with SWRT sometimes putting them upwind (though not always).

It's just confusing that it's not 100% standardized.

Rally america requires it Driver on top on the driver's side and Co-Driver on top on the Co-Driver's side. other than R/A I have no idea.

Ty, I was confused too. I looked at pictures of the rally cars I've taken, and went from there.

I put the flags closest to the b-pillar

But what do I know, I'm just a rallycrosser heh.

RA rulebook is on their site in PDF form, download it :)

the rules state exactly how the names are to be displayed

As far as names/flags go, both Rally America and NASA say to put flags forward of the names. Rally America says driver on top on the driver's side, co-driver on top on the co-driver's side. NASA doesn't care who's on top. Both require or recommend 2" white Helvetica lettering. There are little differences between them and between the requirements for regional and national rallies, but you don't really care!

Meaning closest to the B-pillar on both sides?

Alright, found it in the R-A rulebook. Anyone know how to look up other sanctioning bodies?

NASA RallySport --> http://www.nasarallysport.com/rules.php

CARS (Canada) --> http://www.carsrally.ca/CARSRally/Default.aspx?tabid=92

FIA/WRC/PWRC/JWRC/etc --> http://www.fia.com/sport/Regulations/rallyregs.html

But, the most common is the both names on the rear windows, occupant of that side of the car on top with flags closest to the B pillar. The FIA went to only the driver's last name in the rear windows recently.

But I'm old school. They belong on the trailing edge of the front fenders, that side's occupant on top, with the flag to the left of the name. 8)

And just to save you some digging...

CARS:

(g) The name of the driver and the co-driver must appear either on both front wings or on the rear side windows of the car as shown in the diagram. The national or provincial flag of each crew member must appear adjacent to the name.
When the drivers' names appear on the rear side windows, the letters of the driver's name must be white, of a minimum height of 5 cm and a maximum height of 10 cm in upper and lower case Helvetica bold face. The letters of the names must be the same size.
When the drivers’ names appear on the front wings, letters must be of a contrasting colour to the paintwork and size requirements given above must be followed.

NASA (2008 GRR Appendix A):

Names are 2" tall in the rear quarter windows with the flag closest to the B pillar (flags are optional).

FIA:

9.2 Driver’s and co-driver’s names
9.2.1 The driver’s surname, together with the national
flag of his/her passport nationality, must appear on the
rear side window on both sides of the car, below the
competition number. The driver’s surname must be:
- In Helvetica: upper case for the first letter of the name
and the remainder in lower case.
- In white on a clear background.
- 10 cm high and with a stroke width of 1.5 cm.
9.2.2 In addition to what is required under 9.2.1, the
names of the driver and co-driver, together with their
national flags, must also appear on the front wings of
the car.

I love how NASA gets right to the point. and FIA talks about 'stroke width'.

Actually, NASA doesn't even spell it out. It's in a diagram in an Appendix.

if the decals are going on windows that will be getting put up and down, make sure you don't put the flags where the window track touches the window, as this will lead to premature wear/tearing.

Didn't they used to have the blood type as well?

btw the reason that the FIA spells out typeface and stroke width and so on is to ensure clarity for TV, spectators and officials. Under the NASA rules, strictly speaking you could have it in pink and use Curlz for the typeface (perhaps if your car was sponsored by Bratz or something :D )

Some of them still do. I seem to recall seeing Loeb's blood type on the car recently (we share the same blood type which caught my eye).

Never quite understood that though. No self respecting medical professional is going to give you type specific blood based on what they see on the side of a car. :shocked:

I bet they would if they had no O neg or pos and you were || that close to dying. But I'm sure there are plenty of non self respecting medical professionals out there too:tongue:
