I bought my Silver 2.5RS in September of 2007. It was pretty much stock with the exception of:
-Pullys
-Short Shifter
It had 90xxx miles on it and had been serviced (and documented) well.
Shortly after buying the RS I moved to Santa Barbara for school, this is where the fun starts!
I went to Rabbit Lake with SoCal Evo, and was addicted!!!:eek:
Here are some pics:

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/IMG_6282.jpg
And, it wouldnt be off roading if something didnt break!! This is my first ever de-beed!!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/IMG_6296.jpg
Than I went back again! but it was the same :unamused:, not enough subies!
Next, I went to El Mirage with Lorenkb and some others and had my first taste of RallyX
Here is a pic. (i know... its small):
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/signature.jpg
AFTER THIS I KNEW I WAS HOOKED!! Also, my primative Ultra Armor came in!! this was the first real mod for me.
Shortly after this I went to Thundercross4, it was a blast and i didnt do half bad (not half good either). Sorry, no pics.
Came back to SoCal and hit the slopes!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/IMG_6491.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/IMG_6498.jpg
Than i ordered Borla Headers and a SNELL aproved helmet for Ridgecrest 2008.

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_6707.jpg

This pretty much brings us up to date. I was just out at PCII and had fun (I have no idea how i did), but who cares when you hang out with a bounch of people who love something as much as you do!

I had nouthing to do today so i made mud flaps! took about an hour of measuring and mocking up but i think they will work... and if they dont they only cost about $11!

new development:
cat is going bad, and the car started running rich. now im getting a bit of smoke out the tail pipe. i think it might be running super rich, and thats what is causing the smoke...? the CEL is on for the cat so i know its bad.
any ideas/ input? i also have a code for pulse air or something like that.
Sorry to hear about your cat. I don't comform well, so I just hollow cats out if they go bad, and stress when it is time for smog.
The car looks so nice with mud flaps on it (I'm sure ricer guys think this is hick and nasty looking). If those do not hold up, at least you can use them for templates for new ones.
Galen
04-24-2008, 08:06 AM
^^^ yah, but my post cat O2 sensor is going crazy and really messing with the fule/air mixtures because it thinks something is wrong with the engine.
time to order a new one i guess.
JacksonRally
04-24-2008, 08:09 AM
Not a biggie, cats seem pretty cheap. I'm hunting down a spun ss one to weld into my downpipe. Its around $169.
Galen
04-24-2008, 08:12 AM
yah, im looking at the ones on boxer4racig.com and its like $360 or $270 for a straight pipe with an O2 spacer... i worried that the straight pipe might be really loud (and i dont want to get pulled over for it)
JacksonRally
04-24-2008, 08:15 AM
That is exactly why I'm putting a cat back in mine. Way to loud, plus if you get popped w/o one I hear its a pretty heafty fine. Plus they are required on rally cars (not that mine is but we can all dream).
Galen
04-24-2008, 08:30 AM
yah, sometimes you just have to be legal... although flames would be cool...
Any other suggestions of cheap parts places? subarugenuineparts is like $550, so thats outta the question.
me_jimmy
04-24-2008, 08:45 AM
search for a 100 cell cat, they cost like $100(here anyway)
Galen
04-24-2008, 09:00 AM
it has to pass the strict CA smog laws... ill search tho, thank you :)
sebhockey
04-24-2008, 09:45 AM
Ya just buy a cat and have it welded in locally instead of replacing an entire pipe it'll be cheaper that way.
Galen
04-24-2008, 09:55 AM
^^^ Thanks, just called around and managed to find a place that will do it for pretty cheap.
Galen
04-24-2008, 10:01 AM
UPDATE:
So, i was talking to the CAT guy, and he said that the post CAT O2 sensor is there to monitor the CAT efficiency, and the pre-CAT O2 sensor is the one that actually adjusts fuel/air mixtures... could it be something else??
I'm going to swing by my friends shop and have him take a look at it for me. I dont want to replace an expensive part if I dont have to..
ANY IDEAS??
Smoke is not heavy. I almost passed it off for a cold start condensation, but it didnt seem to go away after the car was warm. Color was white.
ArcticWolf
04-24-2008, 10:46 AM
Color was white.
Black is fuel
Blue is oil
White is coolant.
Head gaskets? :-(
Galen
04-24-2008, 10:21 PM
Well, im an idiot. so it stopped "smoking" after i drove it into town. im pretty sure it was a lot of condensation in the tail pipe. it has been really cold and had rained the night before i saw what i thought to be smoke. i just over reacted and didnt want to hurt anything by driving it. i ran codes and the only one was a air injection one (or something like that)... not even a CAT one (although there used to be..).
anyway, cleared the code and was on my way.
thanks for the input guys, also, my fuel millage dosnt seem to be doing as well as a few months ago. what are the major contributers to thin (besides driving style).
Thanks,
Galen

So today, I found myself with nouthing to do (Again..) and decided to make some tow straps. I'm tired of digging through stuff (be it sand, or snow) t9o find my dam tow hook.
Total cost of the day was $0.00!!! Just used stuff from around the garage. All that is really required is a tow strap, and some bolts with washers (or a industrial sowing maching... but I dont have one of those)
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3903.jpg
I had to cut the strap down to size and didnt want it to frey over time so i came up with this solution... along with burning the ends.
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3904.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3905.jpg
I pretty much looped the front one through the stock tow hook, than routed it through the front bumper.
As for the back one i did something like this:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3906.jpg
I used washers, so the pressure should be pretty evenly spread across the strap. I also burned all the edges where I cut the hole for extra durability.
Had to cut some small holes in the bumpers to rout the straps, but they are very small and not to noticable.
Here is how they look!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3907.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3908.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3909.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_3910-1.jpg
For the cost I would say they are pretty bad***!!
Galen
04-29-2008, 06:53 PM
I tested the mud flaps and they held up great in gravel and mud!
I Like It Sideways
04-29-2008, 07:45 PM
Awesome mini tow strap! Have you tested that out yet?
Also... you better have pictures of testing out the flaps!
Galen
04-29-2008, 08:13 PM
^^ yah, the straps hold the car well, i attached it to my dads truck, than let the cars weight pull on the straps (our drive way is very steep). ahhh, i need to get pics up of some quality mud flap testing! will do ASAP!

So I went out the other day and shot a few photos. They are nouthing special, but they are an update on how the car looks right now 8).

Galen
05-07-2008, 11:07 PM
Or tonight rather. kinda funny actually. I was on my way home and there is this concrete/cement plant on the highway on the way home. they always have these big piles of sand and gravel in the middle of a huge dusty lot. Yah, we are probabley thinking the same thing, "time to get dirty".
well after doing a few long arching donuts around the piles i was trying to cut in and make some tighter ones... long story short i cut to far in and ended up stuck head first in a pile of sand. So i turn off my lights (so the whole world passing by dosnt know what an asshat i am) and begin digging with the only tools handy.. my hands.
All in all, it was quite funny being stuck digging myself out with my hands at 9:30pm in a spot that im technically trespassing on anyway!
I had to share because i was laughing at myself and wanted you all to enjoy it to!
Galen
05-08-2008, 08:48 PM
So a few exhaust shops have told me that there was no way to get my exhaust higher.. funny thing is that when you looked under there was room! So I took things into my own hands because I was tired of having my exhaust hang 1/2in below my rear diff protector.
Here is what I am talking about when I say it is hanging below the diff:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_4088.jpg
First step: Make room for bumper cutting.
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_4093.jpg
Second step: I had to cut away some of the bumper and bend/cut the muffler heat shield.
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_4099.jpg
Third step: I re attached the hangers and cinched them up with zip ties (just until I get to the muffler shop and have them shorten the hangers).
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_4101.jpg
Easy as 1 - 2 - 3!! now I have the extra 1/2 - 1in of clearance at the diff I was looking for!

I went out and found a fun corner today. I spent some time practicing the Scandinavian Flick. No action shots, but ill go back with a friend soon. I really felt like I grasped the concept, with combining LFB and the works. Im starting to really like gravel driving now!!:muhaha:
Speeds down the hill were 55-65mph, than hard on the breaks and shifting into 2nd gear.

All you really have to worry about is ranches. There is a ranger house sorta near that first google link, but im pretty sure it isnt a problem as long as the parking lot is empty.

woot for FUNCTIONAL mods! How much did the group N mounts run at LIC?
I have the whiteline SR bushings too and theyre great. Should look into getting those diff bushings and lock bolts.
Galen
07-14-2008, 09:32 PM
all together it was $122 with tax. $40 for lock down bolts, $35 for SR bushings and $35 for diff. bushings.
Group N mounts ran something like $280ish (i think, dont hold me to that)
The lock down bolts and Diff. bushings make a "night and day" difference. i would venture to say that they are the best thing i have done to the car so far. definitally the best bang for buck hands down.

yup, a lot has happened since i had a good update. for starters the car has a cage:mrgreen:. I took out the back seats and seat belts and all the trunk lining shazz. Than I dry iced the back seat and trunk to remove the sound deadening. than i realized i had a huge hole from my back seat through to my trunk! the solution? I had a aluminum plate made, and think it turned out quite well! Also, i got board and gave my car just a bit more rally flare by replacing the small rear tow strap with a large one.
here are the pics!

In an attempt to get intake temps. down i went and routed some 3" piping from a vent in the front bumper to some intake piping I already had. This all goes to the intake box with a drop in K&N filter. I can feel a difference between the hot engine temps. and the ambient air temps.
said and done this cost me $13.79 and i even ended up with 10' of piping. All items were bought at Home Depot.

It took a bit of melting and molding to get the plastic in the right shape but isnt to hard if you take your time. All I used was a lighter and my hands.
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/ghuntsman/_MG_8273.jpg
As for water concerns, water would have to travel up, around and through the filter. im not to worried. if im planning on doing a huge water crossing ill probably just unhook it to be on the safe side.

Antioch 1 happened. lol, i went through a huge hole a bit to fast i guess. it blew the sidewall out of the tire, knocked the alignment way off and as mentioned, blew the caster bushing.
Tomorrow night I will be starting the brake conversion. will post pics of the progress (and the hole in my tire!!)

Double check clearance with your rally wheels and new brakes before running them. I've heard these particular rear calipers may have to be shaved/grinded a little bit with these wheels. Jamie knows better than I do though as she uses this same setup, stock WRX brakes and Speedlines.

Than I went back again! but it was the same :unamused:, not enough subies!
Next, I went to El Mirage with Lorenkb and some others and had my first taste of RallyX
Here is a pic. (i know... its small):

AFTER THIS I KNEW I WAS HOOKED!! Also, my primative Ultra Armor came in!! this was the first real mod for me.
Shortly after this I went to Thundercross4, it was a blast and i didnt do half bad (not half good either). Sorry, no pics.
Came back to SoCal and hit the slopes!

maybe i will get my impreza a bit dirty as well. i have been wanting to do something like that. my car is pretty setup for track though. not sure how it will handle in the dirt.
i just love the mud.. i used to do lots of bike riding in the mud and miss those days.

Sweet, we can just find a smooth dirt area so nothing breaks.
