Hey all,
I'm looking for a set of summer tires for the GC.
I'm sick of running R comp tires on the street. I need something that'll handle a couple of off road jaunts per week and not get gashed up so easily. Any recommendations?

your running r-comps on the street? wouldn't they burn up really fast? which ones are you running? what compound?
if you just need something that rolls, and is good for daikly driving, then any all-season would work :-P
summer tyres, the "best 2"; (for traction) are Hankook RS-2, and Falken Azenis... Depends on pavement temps to decide which one is better.. RS-2s are a highher temp tread, where as the azenis are a lower temp tread... And for dirt, I always prefered my Azenis (I have had both sets of tyres, switch em up depending on Tarmac temps mainly for auto-x)
FYI... there is never a "best" of anything... But these are the "best dry tarmac traction tyres" I have seen/used...

I'd go with an all-season tire, and then (if you have money to spare) get R-comps just for auto-X or trackdays. I got a set of Kumho Solaces in october of '06, and after ~30k miles and a few rallyX events they are still fine.

I'm running Yoko A032-R's on the street. I also run Azenis but they're horrible in the dirt. They're all chewed up and at 3/32nds.
I will look into the Kumho's. I can get a great deal on some Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S's that I'm looking into.. anyone have experience with them?
coming from r compounds you'll hate anything that is an all season, and you have awd so wet traction won't be of terrible issue and it sounds like you're just looking for summer tires. the 615's arent a bad choice esp. for the price and potenza 01r's are another option i'd look into. within the next month some early feedback on the new toyo's should be in too, i'd wait until word is out on those as well

Do a search for the Pzero nero's, I was about to grab those too but found too many people shooting em down. Ended up with some Yoko Avid S4 M+S and they hook up great in the dirt. Had them for approx. 5,000 miles and have had about 10 gravel runs on em and the wear has been great. They break pretty easy on the asphalt but that suits my driving style fine so i'm happy with em.

I ran my BFG g-Force KDWS on the street for a while and they were surprisingly good in the dry. And they're great on the dirt, reasonably open tread and nice stiff sidewalls.

i think you're going to have a hard time with any summer tire on the dirt. they will get beaten up, and probably moreso as you go softer into things like the azenis or RE-01Rs. but if you're willing to sacrifice your tarmac traction and go with an all-season, you should be okay on the dirt.
my favorite all-season for all-around tarmac "performance" was the Dunlop SP5000 sport, but i never off-roaded it. the continental contiextreme might do okay on dirt (i liked it in the snow b/c of the tread pattern), but it is a cheap all-season that is easy to break loose on the street.
anything with an M+S marking, but no snowflake should hold up well off-road as well as give you decent traction--not sure how many options you'll find in an all-season car tire, though. look for tread patterns with larger gaps between the blocks, esp. in a forward or angled direction.

You could avoid a major compromise by finding a set of used
steelies and whatever all/no season tires for your off-tarmac
driving and keep a set of summer tires on separate wheels for
abusing on the street. Gives you many more options and better
overall performance.

Just need something that'll last a while and good for the daily trek to work. I have tons of rims and tires but I need something smack dab in the middle that'll be decent enough to keep on the car when it's in "streetable" mode. I'm not a fan of swapping rims and tires just to do some mild offroading. Sometimes you take the long dirty way home from work :)

I got the perelli p 0 neros and they are holding up great!
nokians always do well and seem to fit the bill of what you're looking for, quite grippy and last long, 1 or 2 of their all seasons are snowflake/winter rated as well

i currently have nokian wr's on my car and they do well in the dirt.
i'll be replacing them soon though. thinking about going with a set of dunlop sp60's.
they look like a good aggressive all season.

Anyone used the Hakkapelliita 2's? Curious to see how they compare to Blizzak WS50's.

what kind of budget are you on? I noticed you said summer tires but if you dont want to worry about rain and things like that... i've had good experiences with a few tires.
BFGoodrich Super Sport A/S. A great all around tire, could have a bit better grip in the dry, but they're awesome in the rain.
Kumho Ecsta ASX. Not as good as the BFG's in the wet / snow, but cheap and they last a long time.
If you're on a tighter budget, i had good experiences with General Exclaim UHP's. You're probably saying "Generals?" yeah. theyre cheap, but they have excellent tread life and they're found just about everywhere for about a $100 for 17"s. Not bad for a capable M+S tire. Seeing as how these are going on a GC, they'd probably be cheaper too.

Thanks for the replies guys,
I think I may get the Pirelli PZero Neros.
I was going to get a set of Nexen CP641's as I can get them at $76CDN each. What I'm concerned about is belt strength and I've had customers come back complaining about them vibrating. Their belts were shifty and they were on brand new tires. However my distributor swears by them and sells them like hot cakes. (I doubt a regular car puts a set of tires to the test like a purpose built and used Impreza though!)

Local MN folks swear by the Potenza G009 (H-rated, HPAS) for all aroundness (DD+RallyX), though its being replaced by the G019 Grid (H or V, HPAS) as of this year.

I had the G009's on my Accord. It is a good all around tire.

I have p zero m+s on my wagon and the seem pretty good but I was looking at my fronts this morning and after 30 miles on dirt with 3 rallycrosses and a few dirt road runs I am chewing up the center ribs.
Also my wifes car had ASX's on it and they were pretty poor, she ran through them after 20k and they hydroplaned really bad.
I would love to get some KDAW's but no one sells them any more, any one have any experience with the new super sport as?

I'm using Riken Raptors, they are an affordable tire the michelin makes. Theyre all seasons and coming from a person that used to blow through tires (in my old cars) they are amazingly resilient and plenty of grip in wet, dry and off road . Check them out ive been on the same set for a year now and with reg rotation and pressure checks they will last the rest of this summer and fall before i need a new set

The FAlken Azenis 615 is an Awesome Awesome summer time! :D great pricing , excellent grip, good feed back. Good for wear (2 -3 Track days, A dozen autocross days Plus 15,000 miles of twisty spirited driving!)

I had the Fuzion ZRi's and those tires are my fav, they are made by bridgstone. Alot of people dont use them for some reason. The tire wear is great, as long as you rotate them. Dry/wet traction is just as good, very good grip and in the dirt I was flying along the tank trails with some parts being loose sand at about 65mph with no problem. I would recomend those tires anyday, think I paid $125/each with that replacement plan warranty thing. People complain about the sidewall look cause it does look kinda strange, but I say if the tire preforms who care's what it looks like. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/noktrnal1/zri.jpg

If you want a strictly summer set of tires, I would go with the new NT-05's, as for something to take into the dirt that has some kind of tread as well as have some fun on the street, I have ran the BFG SuperSport A/S tires, and they are the best all around tire that I have ran, and I can't wait to run them again. Just my 2 cents,

I think I'm going to give these a try to replace my worn out RE92's. I'll let you know how they work out.
