Fellas,
I've been doing some playin' in some really fine silt and I'm worried aobut filtering it out. I've got the SPT intake with the heat shield, but the heat shield doesn't do a whole heck of a lot to keep silt away from the filter.
So, what's the best way to protect my engine? Frequent oil changes? High quality oil filter? Box type filter? A tighter seal around. I've got some intuition as to how to approach it, but I was hoping for somebody with some experience to work with.
Thanks!

i don't have any silt-specific experience...but a properly functioning air filter should keep any possibly harmful amounts of silt out of your engine. this is from K&N's website..."K&N performs this efficiency testing on a sample of our filter designs both in-house and through independent laboratories using coarse test dust. Coarse test dust includes particles ranging in size from less than 5.5 microns to 176 microns. As a point of reference, a human hair is approximately 50 microns in diameter. The efficiency number represents the percentage of test dust retained by the filter and thereby kept out of an engine. "
i don't know how silt measures up physically, but i have to assume that it falls into that size range.

I would go get a K&N recharge kit and wash the filter then oil it up with the oil in the box.

Frequent cleaning of the air filter (if you have a washable one like the K&N) and oiling of it is probably a best practice. Also cleaning out the engine compartment often is a good idea too.
I just did this recently, more for piece of mind than anything.

i have a k&n and after a dry lake bed event only one side is dirty (the side that is supposed to be)...so in other words the k&n works..

here's what i do for silt.
every time i go get my car worked on at local suby shops, in this case its Suby Specialties in Monrovia, i ask them or go thru the dumpster for old air filters that replaced off old lady cars that are in still good condition.
before my silt/dry lake action, i take my good filter out, and put the recyled one in, end of the day, dump the recycled one, and replace your regular street air filter.
