View Full Version : JVL was right, RallyCross is like masturbation...

So I had the opportunity to run the rally sprint at Ridgecrest last week. And well, after flying around corners at 40mph and straights at +70mph (struggling to keep the ass end on the road), my next rally cross event doesn't seem quite as exciting.

HOWEVER...(before all of you think i've crossed, haha).

I had a great time at that event. I rented Jack Szantos' SRT-4 and we definitely put it through the paces between the two of us. By the 3rd or 4th run, I was acclimated to the higher speeds and pretty much had the 5 mile course memorized.

But most of the reason I had such a great time, was I got to concentrate on my driving, and beating my previous times. I was able to concentrate on the best lines, etc because I WASN'T worried about what to do with my feet, how to keep the car in control in those turns, what to do if I came in too hot, or started to lose it on a fast, slick straight away.

All the techniques I had been taught at Paul Eklund's and CRS' rally schools, and that I have been practicing over the past year at rallyX events prepared me immensely for this event. At no point was I fumbling with what to do with my feet while shifting, in the middle of a corner, while left foot breaking.

On corners where I came in too fast I didn't panic.....I recovered and didn't freak out. Why? Because it wasn't the first time I was completely sideways in a car going around a turn....a little LFB and stay on the throttle...problem solved.

The hardest part was actually getting used to rally tires!

And don't forget, this was in a FWD car (I'm used to AWD) that I had NEVER driven before.

Lets take a look at results:

http://www.rallydata.com/Results/HDT_2008_ClubScoreBoard.htm

First....Jack's first run (and the only run the ECU didn't give us trouble) was a 8.28......only .60 minutes (or just over 30 seconds) slower than the fastest rally car time (which was an AWD subaru).

After that we had ECU issues and the car wouldn't run over 2400 rpms....even then our times were in the low 9's and high 8's. Chrissie Beavis (2wd Jetta) was running high 7s, low 8's.....so considering we were rookies in a 'limp mode only' car, I thought we did pretty good.

So yeah.....Rally cross certainly isn't a stage rally by a long shot, but anyone that wants to learn the basics so they don't flip it on their first stage rally, this is an easy and cheap way to get started! (oh yeah, and there's nothing wrong with playing with yourself ;) )

So how much was the entry fee? Do they plan on doing more of these events?

Fantastic! I want to do some local hill climbs but they require roll cages. I don't want to cage the car just yet so I planned to run rallyx and do some classes before I do.

Was the car you rented caged?

Also that must have been fun. At least the car let you rev to 2500. Did you find out what caused the limp mode?

Entry fee was $200/person. Pretty cheap, and they're hoping to get that down to $100 if there's enough support.

Yes, the car was caged....the only difference between a rally sprint and a full stage rally is the distance. They also were very lax on the whole starting/ATC/MTC stuff. It was more like a rally cross where you had a run group and you just did your 4 runs as quickly as possible.

the limp mode issue was actually from the crank position sensor being loose....every time we hit a big bump (about every 2-3 seconds) it would send the ecu into limp mode.

eventually we just learned to upshift earlier instead of turning the car on and off again and just dealing with it.

Is there a max average speed enforced for your events? Our local rally club is looking into starting up some sprints and we have 3.5km maximum stage lengths and an average max speed of 80km/h (~50mph).

I forget what the 'max' speed limit is, but its right around 50mph. Same with course length....its 1.5 miles, but you can ask for an extension if you want to do a longer course.

That's funny 50 mph at a rallysprint, pardon my comment, but we were in 3rd gear at Ridgecrest in an STi that's around 60 mph, granted it was very brief, but I would think 50 mph for a rallysprint would be a bit low. If I get to do one at Prairie City maximum speed would be stated at 60 mph, I'd figure that would be a realistic limit.

BTW, I just picked up a '71 510 with a cage, now to update any safety equipment.

JVL is always right. Sometimes it pays to just shut up and listen to the man.

Rallycross is like masturbation. It's cheap and you can do it as often as you want unless you have equipment problems.

Er, i mean, uh...

PS I hope that 50mph is the max *average*. I have done 50 at WOR rallycrosses which are awfully tight. I've seen close to 80mph (wheel speed) at Detroit rallycrosses

hopefully my car will get a cage within the next couple months.

I would love to participate in a rally sprint. That is awesome.
Congrats on doing fairly well in an unfamiliar car!!

I didn't know chrissie beavis did some driving of her own...

yeah, she beats on a jetta.

Ridgecrest was fairly tight.....there were 2 good corners that were easily 1st gear. A couple others in deep sand (and tight)....plenty of places to get speed, but overall, not a super fast course.

lets see....~5 miles, best time was around 7:30, so that's ~40mph over the whole course.

Any idea if they have another one planned, even if it isn't part of CRS?

Always right? Often times right would be more accurate..

Pomspeed,
What color is that 510? Brad Fast's old car? Love the 510s, they are a hoot to drive on stage. 1600 or 2000cc ?

I can say "always" because he has the same attitude towards crap that I do:

Don't say anything unless you're sure of what you're saying.

Right now it's white with some small brown primer spots. It belonged to a Sacramento area guy, Brian.

BTW, what is the link to the topic of this thread? Is it at SS? Thanks

how much does it cost to rent a rally car for an event like this?

UP2MTNS
04-08-2008, 03:40 PM
its a lot....something like $1000/day plus tires and gas and 'rally insurance'. (this is based on the Ford Focus that was available to rent)

I was going to split it with a guy for $500/each, but there were insurance issues, so I just offered Jack some cash and my word as a gentleman that if I messed up his car, I'd eventually pay for it ;)

Brent....you don't want to read the related SS thread, it was ugly. it started out about a discussion about rally clubs, how to get more people involved, and then I started talking about rallyX people and things went downhill from there.
