I own a 2004 wrx 5spd with about 83,000 miles, and for about 11K miles the turbo smokes every now and then. It is a stock turbo and still has the heat shield on it and i cannot locate exactly where the smoke is coming from. Ive heard from some friends (that dont own suby's) that it could either be an oil line or a crack in the housing? Is this possible and if so, is my only option upgrading the turbo  . Please let me know what to do. Thanks.

and if i do have to upgrade the turbo, anyone know of a VF34 for sale that is cheap. i found a VF34 with injectors and a fuel pump at speedelement.com for $1399 as a kit.

also wanted: CobbTuning accessport (unmarried)

it is probably the turbo going. the bearing seals start to leak when they go bad

If you're that worried about it then just replace the TD04. There's always someone upgrading their stock turbo for a bigger one & selling the TD04 for about $100 or less... or if you're feeling a little ballzy just get a stock STI (VF39) for around $350.

That actually happened to me on my 02'. It was smoking near the turbo... so I just took it off.

Thats what i was thinking... this would be a good time to upgrade! of course the wallet always has its limitations...

Is the smoke under the hood, or out the exhaust only? Only reason I ask, is I've seen a bad PCV valve actually get oil in an intake piping before and your post didn't specificly answer that question.

It could be a simple as a copper crush washer on an oil line went, or a cracked housing if its under the hood. Could also be a leak at the downpipe, which could have led to the seal on the exhasut side going bad too.

Sorry if I jsut gave yu nightmares, but I've had a turbo i swore I tore up, and another model exact part no and all on another car, give me nothing but headaches, (and that one was babied.)
