What, if anything, will happen to paint if a decal is left in the same spot for a long period of time? I figure the paint that is exposed will fade a little and when the decal is removed the paint behind the decal will be darker than the rest. ???

I removed my factory badging from my 2004 and you can barely tell that it was ever there. also took off the "outback sport" (which is a sticker) and you cant tell there either.

after a LONG time of direct sunlight exposure you might notice a difference. For the rally car, im not too worried about it... i think tree to paint is going to be more damaging than any UV rays.

This is why I ask. I put this decal on a few weeks ago and wanted to make sure that if I ever decided to remove it I could do so with no ill effect.

On a few of my old cars I had decals on the pain. Nothing happened when I took them off.

depends on the paint. i have been deeling with decals for ever now and scions have crappy paint, so after a year i had the whole nicer paint below the decals effect but i wouldnt worry about the side of a wing...

BUTTTTT,,, cali sun is one of the most destroying sun in the US... sooo also.. paint on fiberglass gets more ruined than on metal because of the heat that gets under the paint. it will happen but as likley as the side of the wing

also how much sun/UV rays can penitrait your sticker.. the more it can go thru it the better chance u wont have nice paint below lol

I know what you mean. It's like posting on something then removing it after a while. It will have a darker or brighter effect because it is not exposed to the sun.

A friend of mine bought tiburon from auction a few years ago. When he waxed it the first time he noticed that his car was at one point a decepticon. Nothing he has tried to remove it has worked.

I think it depends quite a bit on the sticker itself, or more importantly, the adhesive. As well as the quality of the paint.

That being said, I really dont see why anyone with a rally car would really care, but then again look at my car. I'm not exactly in to "show"

sometimes the decal can "sink into" the paint and it will leave very faint marks showing that it was there.

My car had a transformers Autobot Decal on the B-Piller before I owned it. And I know this because if you look very closely to the paint you can see the outline and edges to the cut of the decal.

But its really nothing to worry about as it is very hard to spot if you don't know its there.

Shouldn't mess up the paint, especially if its just a regular decal. If you want to be super cautious when you take it off, heat up the adhesive with a blow dryer when you take it off.

ive had problems with cheap decals where taking it off became extremely difficult and it left a sticky film outline which is still there today. i've heard that waxing the area before applying the decal is a way of creating a barrier between the paint and the decal that wont prevent the decal from sticking. but will prevent problems when you decide to remove the decal.

we took off a metric ton worth of stickers from the wife's wagon, courtesy of the previous owner. After removing the vinyl, washing the car, trying to clean the adhesive off with mineral spirits, 2 years later? Still looks like the stickers were removed earlier today.

Car: 05 wrx wagon from Monterey, CA.

Been detailing all my life. The adhesive etches into the paint (Ive done some paint work and found the metal, etched) and the suns uv rays transfer the decal onto the paint like a photo positive. Dont take the sun...lightly.
