another good thread:

Looks like nets will be mandatory in '09, so better plan for it now.

Side Nets, different door bar configurations, 200MM gap between the seats and side bars, etc will all be mandatory...

Starting mid season on FIA events with the new door bar rules coming in for the 2009 season.

There is no discussion yet of making them mandatory in RA/NASA/CARS in the immediate future. Although, like any piece of safety equipment - think about it! If you can afford it, get it.

its about damn time, i cant believe they havent had them up yet, id run them in my car.

Take a look at travis pastranas roll on the vermont sports car page. His hand is out of the window for almost a whole rotation. A window closed serves as a window net until you hit something lol

^^^ i was kinda suprised how they didnt need the nets cause i was thinking with as much safty gear as your supposed to have that just seems like somethign they should have cause peoples arms fly out no matter how much they try to stop it. there is a lot of force that you have to fight back against when crashing or rolling to keep body parts in the car

The net on the window sides is a good idea but I don't like the middle one and the way they fix it to the bar. The net is really too close to the shifter and handbrake. Anyway it almost only protect you against a punch in the face by ur copilote if you roll over.

yes, keeping your hands in and stuff is good, but its actually meant more to support the seat....so in a lateral crash its less likely to crack/break.

also, that thread was talking about in a head on, they've seen tests where in a winged seat (with side head restraints) even with HANS, someone's head can snap forward past the restraint, and recoil on the OTHER side of the wing, which would suck.

Of course, if that really can happen, why not make nets mandatory and HANS optional.....I know I'll put a net(s) in my car mandatory or not. HANS will depend on a few things.

I know it sucks due to expences, but i hope all organizations make HANS, nets, and whatever else mandatory. if theres any sport that needs it most, its rally. The safer the drivers, the more drivers we have to enjoy it, and maybe more products will come out due to the vast needs of HANS so we can see a price drop.

Ill be runnign whatever I can get, and what I cant get, ill rent from Safe Drives

I think its a good idea. The only downside that I can see is it makes getting in and out that much more of a pain.

NASA ( road racing ) is already making "us" use them ...

They get really anoying with just "regular" race seats . ( see, above pics 2 & 3 . ) You NEED the fancy ones with the HANS "pads" or the big "elaphant ears" ( see, the 1St pic posted ) just to keep the things @ a reasonable distance fron your face .

Yeah. I mean if you have to jump out in a hurry they are going to be in the way.

something i have always been scared of, watching cars slide roof side down into water is what i would dread.

You have to balance things tho, theres good and bad im sure, but id imagine its a pretty quick release. But its one more thing you need to do before you get out.

I think the safedrives one have a d-ring quick release with a red nylon strap that you just pull down and it pops open. but yeah, if you're in a pond and the car is filling up quick its like...one more thing to 'do' before you can get out is a little scary.

one point/question that's made in that thread that I think needs to be addressed is, 'when does it stop?' While I think NASA and RA have the drivers best interests in mind, but its like.....ok, when do you stop? When is it finally enough and I can really plan w/o worrying about something 'new' coming out next year? I'm kind of glad I'm not building my car this year, since it looks like MORE things are going to change for '09.

I agree it seems like every couple of months there is a new reg that comes out and you need to spend loads of money just to make the car up to par.

I was planning on running safety nets regardless. I've seen too many videos with guys arms out the window (or more of their bodies) during a roll. The idea of having my arm crushed by the weight of the car is nasty.

Get the nets.

Yeah I think if it came down to it I would run them too. Maybe when I get the money to start building my rally car I will get them.

Yes there is a quick release.

If you all have any questions on these nets I'm you guy. I have run them in my rally car for over two years now.
