Speaking cost etc can you do this? Say pick up some light truck wheels and then go get some BF Goodrich All Terrains?

IF you can get away with that, is it safe?

I was wondering the same thing... I have a set of 225/60/16 blizzaks for the winter and I want to know as well if i can get some AT TAs under the car...

Having worked at Sears for the past ... 6 years they are not light... somethings may have to be beefed up.. axles for one hubs and cariers... oh and the rack and pinion.. but this is just a guess...

seems like a sketchy idea IMO.

sketchy? Sketchy would be sitting outside your house waiting for you to leave :p

Stupid... well.. yeah :)

Wheel weight and tire weight would be a big issue as well as getting over the thick bulge sidewall and clearance issues. I was just thinking if you figured the right size tire out that you could get it to fit over the brembo's. Something cheaper then selling a testicle for 17" dirt tires is all.

i would think clearance issues would be a big problem...

we can think all think as much as we would like. But is it safe?

Yes, you can safely put something like a BFG A/T tire on a car - provided they are sized appropriately. No need for "truck wheels", just get the correct sized tire for the rims you have.

This was very common practice back in the 70's and 80's in North American Stage Rallying. Just about everyone ran BFG Trailmakers or All Terrains, Coopers, etc. There are a few people that are running 15" light truck tires for rallycross here in NER on VWs and Saabs.

That said, I doubt that you are going to be able to find a 17" All Terrain tire that will fit in a Subaru wheel well. They are all going to be way too big to fit. If I recall correctly, the smallest 17" BFG A/T is a 245/75-17 - somehow I don't think that is going to fit on an STi.

A big problem i am finding (regarding fitting tires in a subaru wheel well) is also brake clearance...

I could see how running smaller / correct sized truck tires would work, but i figure there would be quite a bit of sidewall flex, etc.

I agree with Storz, i love the input Rallycat!

There are a couple guys in MI that run Ford Ranger wheels on some Chrysler Conquests. Don't know what tires they have other than snows.

there are now real issues with putting truck tires on cars. on teh older subarus (GLs, Brats, ect...) there is a decent sized off roading demographic. my friedn just got some 29" interco superswampers to put on his GL hatch.

the main issues you will have are gear ratios, and fender clearance. on teh GL its no big deal to cut 3"-4" off the fenders to clear some big tires. you might not want to do this on a WRX or STi for aesthetic reasons.

when you go with larger tires you are requiring more power to turn said tires and also really messing up your gearing.

none the less it is doable, and i know someone with a impreza wagon (93-01) that is running 30" BFGs on forester suspension.
