dont know where to put it but here is the question. if i was to get a legacy, gc wagon, or an outback what class would that be in for rally? would you be able to run a rally? i know it would be 4wd and it would depend on the mods but ive only seen one real rally wagon.

you could run production class...everything would have to be stock. which means its cheap...but things break more.

that's high level, I'd get download the RA rules book and read up.

Which sanctioning body are you thinking about running with?

Either way, I strongly suggest downloading the relevant rules and reading.

For R-A, you'd be in either Open or PGT (production).

NASA would be P1 if Turbocharged or P2 for N/A (both "open" classes) or GT,SS, or Stock depending on where exactly your particular car falls in the stock/production categories. I think it basically boils down to a WRX or STi (anything turbocharged) is GT, 2.5L and 2.2L N/A ends up in SS, and 1.8L N/A is Stock - but don't hold me to that. :?

In general, open classes are "cheaper" to run in that stock because you can use whatever for parts, but then you end up spending big bucks if you want to be competitive. The stock/production classes, you start to get hampered by having to run OEM parts in some cases to remain legal in the class, things break more often, etc, so it becomes more expensive to keep the car going if you just want to get out there and race.

Are you talking stage rally or rallycross?

For all stage rally, the struts are usually free (i.e. most people run something much beefier than stock).

For rallycross, consult your local rules. Usually, the strut itself is free (most people don't want to get into the "is a KYB aftermarket replacement strut enough to bump you up a class" debate) provided it is mounted to the normal locations and is not a different design than the OEM. But your rules may vary.

it sounds like you are talking rally-x

Calif Rally Series rally-x rules:
(the shortened version)

SS4 = stock all wheel drive (stock means drop in airfilter ok, cat back ex. ok, ECU flash ok but otherwise pretty much OE stock only)

SM4 = modified all wheel drive (pretty much anything except rally tires goes in this class)

R4 = rally all wheel drive (do pretty much whatever you want in this class)

i was meaning rally cross. but i want to eventually try out stage rallys. but i live in az so the rules will probably be a little different i know some of the rally cross rules out here but didnt know any of the stage rally stuff

Stage Rally classes and rallycross classes are worlds different.

Rallycross is very easy to figure out where you fall into. WRR breaks it down very well, so go by those guidelines.
