Does anyone have any pix of nice roof scoops? I would love one. But I have to figure out exactly how to make it look good without going overboard ya know? I would like to start a thread of posting cars with roof scoops/vents. Post up anything you have. thanx

Oh yeah roof scoops, I'd say the one from primitive is about as good as you can get for the money. I know that is what we are planning on putting on the OBS if we can't figure out how to fab up our own that won't leak. When I get my Rex to take over as a DD I'd like to put one on it too just so people can go WTF. My old GTI had one and it made all the difference in the world during the summer with no A/C.

Yeah but the two big reasons you want a roof scoop are:
1) cooling
2) dust control
The positive pressure of the air coming in the roof scoop forces the dust to stay out of the cabin.

yeah.. but i think it would be more fun on nicer days lol
it was more a joke cause thats one more thing to worry about while driving and i dont need that, but rallyx totally fun(when its dry)

A good roof scoop, something along the lines of what primitive sells, is a very worthwhile investment for a lot of cars. If you have bi-directional opening ability then you can either force air into the cabin, as Aaron mentioned to help keep dust out, or you can vent inside air out, the scoop will create a vaccum effect, allowing you to have fresh air in the car without opening the windows in adverse weather. My wife wants me to put one on her OB when she finally gets one. She still remembers the one in my old GTI and how well that worked.

Wow...I never knew roof scoops were so hi-tech! I guess this would be a great mod for ppl who drive offroad and want some fresh air without all the dirt and dust particles.

are primitive's bi-directional?
his hood scoop kit is the cheapest I've seen....by a lot.
wolfman79
01-02-2008, 09:51 AM
Yes primitive's vents are bi-directional. For people like me who can't stand to have the windows up due to a lack of fresh air these things rock. And the combo price he has for the vent and scoop is hard to beat.

Requires medium skill to install and the willingness to cut a hole in your roof.
HAHA!
For $89, I'd get one.

One is enough.

I only had one in my GTI, it was more than enough, don't even want to think what would happen with two. With a good scoop on it those things really get some air in there.

I installed the primitive setup on my car. I LOVE IT!

Does anybody know if there's a spec c roof vent replica? I daily drive my car, so an OEM look is important to me, but I don't want to spend nearly $500 on such a thing. It just seems silly that a flap of metal, hinges, and a plastic piece of interior trim go for so much now.

Just got the scoop in the mail yesterday!
It's from ebay, not sure where the guy got it from though.
The vent is from the place Jon (UP2MTNS) linked.
Now that I have the scoop I realize that I could have gotten a bigger vent!

I read over my previous post and i mentioned that i was only getting the pop hatch (which i did... the JDM one) but i found an awesome deal on an already painted black scoop on another forum so i swooped in on it.

Scoop install (http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showpost.php?p=135910&postcount=748)
The scoop was a pain in the ass to put on because its difficult to reach in with a wrench and tighten down the nuts on the bolts. Its even more difficult doing it yourself, reaching in through the window to tighten down the bolt! I made a cardboard template of where the holes would be, and then drilled them in the roof. The trick is to get the curvature of the scooped lined up right on the roof so that it sits relatively flat.

It's approx. 16" wide x 17 1/4" long (from the outside)

finally found some pics....Yes, you can run a roof rack. I had to move it back a bit but I still used it for my mountain bike that day. The rack is a Yakima.

Is it possible to keep your headliner with the Primitive style vent? Anyone have pics of what they did inside? Also, anyone have dimensions on where on the roof to mount it? I will be using a scoop if that matters. I can't wait to cut a whole in my roof. :)

You could keep your headliner but you would need to cut a large hole in it that not only allows room for the vent but also has enough room for the handle to go forward and back. So unless you custom fab some kind of trim piece it would look pretty ghetto.

Yeah i am not sure how you would really do that with the headliner. The JDM vent comes with the nice interior bezel pieces (which i still have if someone needs it)

oh wait....I was looking at the wrong one....the PE one is actually only $26.50 on this website...its letter 'C'.
The ones I have are letter 'D' and are only $30.80 each.
BTW, that sealant stuff they sell on there is the bomb.

I got the "C" one, but I might try to get one that is a little bigger, so I might sell the one I have. I am going to wait until I have the chance to measure Jon's vent and see if it would fit under my scoop.
BTW, it was only 26.50!!!

I was thinking about going with the JDM vent but the price is just silly and didn't you say in another post that the width of the vent made the fitment of the scoop a PITA?

I cut out a little more than I wanted but still looks good. I used zip ties on the headliner going around a piece of hose to get it to curl up and stay.
