:rally-driver:
Well, its attempt 2 to get into stage rally (previously owned the jake himes sentra). Due to a nice full time job, plenty of vacation, and no kids..this time is going to work

So whats the car?
1986 Pontiac Fiero 2m4 (5 speed 4 cyl) 2.5l tbi motor

Why a fiero?
-mid engine rwd..fun, gocart like, nimble, parts are cheap..and everywhere..lets face it theres always a crazy fiero guy with 8+ fieros sitting for "spares" that the guy will let parts go 4 cheap

Whats done so far:
-toms racing vesta wheels
-2 sets of michelin gravel tires
-stripped interior
-rollcage material ready to be bent up and welded in
-had to rebuilt the front end a bit from a previous owner beating it up..so now its tube frame and angle iron for mounting the fenders, bumpers etc..much stronger than a stock deathtrap fiero's front end in my opinion.
-new struts in front-kyb gas adjust, kyb gr2/excel g in rear (i will see how these work for one event)
-the motor is the 100hp, 135ftlb 2.5 4cyl..enough torque and power for a lightweight car and for g2. its been updated with new plugs, msd coil, accel 8mm wires, advanced timing, 93 octane, custom header into a 2.25 inch exhaust
-front skid plate is made of (usual) thick wall tubing for braces with 1/4 inch aluminum..enough to protect the radiator and steering rack
-vented front bumper and hood to cool the reputable hot running fieros off enough, soon to include a better fan on switch.
-lightened up the rear engine cover by separating the upper fiberglass with the fiberglass reinforcement on lower..seeing itll be hood pinned down
-as of now thats all i can think of..ill take pics tonight and upload them right away:cheers:

DON'T DO IT.

fiberglass body isn't good for rally. just bad... unless the car is a religious pick , go with something else. :)

the last team i knew who tried a feiro never finished a rally.

im not worried about the body being glass..thats really nothing, like i said the front end is completely rebuilt in tube form and much stronger. plus the cage will really help the "bad crash test ratings" of a fiero...im doing supports from the cage to the front end also for protection..also the "iron duke" motor will run forever, one of the most reliable motors..im gusseting/boxing the a arms for longevity, supported the front shock mount, and soon rear strut tops. plus the fiero is a full car under the fiberglass its a skeleton really. again not worried at all.
pics will be up next, however not fully up to date pics

biggest reasoning is that its a good g2 starting car to truly learn car control in stages even more.
heres some pics..mainly teasers..ill take more tomorrow.. i need ideas for paint scheme, thinking something to do with white, and green or something close...but nothing monster ken block'esque.

Here's some inspiration to keep you going! The Lovesac rally fiero i saw at Desert Storm rally this year.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a224/PhotoshopCory/Desert%20Storm%202010/IMG_6648.jpg

unfortunately it met its demise at this same event. I don't have any pics but it did roll.

^haha yes! this was my initial inspiration..and i think theres a few crash pics of it. i have a fiero 2.8 6 cyl. im building up but for the first event or two im going to stick with the lower power 2.5 for learning more

er, good luck I guess. I don't think anyone here will talk you out of it anyway. The only fiero's I've seen were usually broken or almost on fire, and that was rallyX. my definition of a good grp 2 starter is something that can get on stage with a reasonable amount of work and then be upgraded and competitive as time, money and skill allow.

have you talked to anyone running a mid engine car? or a scrutineer about the cage? my understanding is that it can be really difficult to shoehorn a new cage (ie what meets the current rules) into one of these.

yes ive talked to plenty of people that ran a mr setup car, the cage is the basic fia setup with proper supports, gussets etc. the rear hoop support bars go to the rear strut tops etc. im also in contact with multiple scrutineers as i build this car/cage. the fiero can easily be upgraded as needed, its a very reliable car and ive made sure everything is safe in the car. not sure where this fiero on fire thing is coming from..i mean maybe from a daily driver and faulty wiring but this isnt my first car by any means..im at 23 cars, i have a crx with an lt1 v8 in it thats now rwd..so wiring, fabrication, safety, etc is really just mandatory for me to go through it all.. plus like i said i have the v6 im building up waiting to upgrade which will be around 180hp which is more than plenty...ive gone through all the precautions and still making sure everything is ok with the car before its inspected/logbooked.

For what it's worth, a late 70's - early 80's Porsche 924 is another very affordable car for this stuff. Near 50/50 weight distribution, rwd, third longest production vehicle from Porsche (plenty of parts), and essentially a Volkswagon (easy to work on) engine make it hard to believe that more folks aren't going that way. Got one in my garage that talks to me every day.

I think the Fiero will be cool - I just wonder how it will be on your back with such a short wheelbase.

the only reason i dont like the 924 setup is the damn bosch fuel injection setup, if you mess it up once its never the same lol..but it should be just fine. look up the washpa rally mr2's, lovesac fiero etc. very competative cars

true, it is rather delicate. But an EJ25 would solve that.

I'll look up those cars - love looking at pics.

Are you planning on running any Rally-America events with this car? If so, call Mike Hurst now and discuss the plastic doors/roof material. You might find that R-A will not issue you a log book or allow the car to compete unless you change them to metal.

And find your local tech inspector that is going to issue you a log book and start discussing the cage design. You are going to have to come up with some creative interpretations of the cage rules in a few places to make something work. If they are involved from the start, it will make life easier when you get to the point of having the log book issued.

Fiero's are kind of cool, unusual cars and could be a blast on stage, but go into this with your eyes open. It is not going to be the best car for stage rallying. Even something as mundane as where to put your helmets during a transit becomes an issue in a car this small.

all of this has been done. im in contact with scrutineers about it..and theres no reason that a door being plastic/glass will be restricted if its from factory..the roof is metal under the fiberglass, the door has proper crash bars etc. and its factory composite, if its aftermarket it is not allowed..ive read the r.a. rules book since 07 religiously and all the updates, im well informed with all the fia rules etc. i have a cage design layed out and ok'd with a scrutineer. i really have no worries right now with the car. and i dont plan on having the fiero be the best car ever..just a learning car for g2 in all aspects of driving, suspension, car layout etc.

im not worried about the body being glass..thats really nothing, like i said the front end is completely rebuilt in tube form and much stronger.

hmm... hope you are still rally legal. You're not allowed to race tube framed cars, and you can't do any roll cage structure in front , of your front suspension, and nothing behind the rear suspension. (cage has to be entirely between front and rear suspension)

the Fierro that Aaron posted a picture of , is the same car i was talking about (it never finished an event) though not all of its DNFs were mechanical .

But since its a religious pick for you, go for it. (nothing like being in your favorite car, out on stage)

I'd start talking to rally scrutineers NOW, show them pics, what you have, etc, etc, and what your plans are. :)

, I read the last page after this. looks like you have been in contact with scrutineers 8) keep at it. Pretty sweet looking ride. I love the hideous green rims (yes i wrote that correctly) :) hehehehe

you should also pencil in what rally you are trying to get ready for (IE a date) it definitely helped my build a lot to have a date i was trying to make... :)

Thanks for the input. It really is appreciated whether its constructive criticism or what not. And everything as is on the vehicle right now is 100% good to go and legal. Ive been in contact with gene..cant remember his last name at this moment through this ok'ing everything sending pics etc. so i know im not wasting my time with the car. (just got a confirmation email saying yes its good to go yet!)

previous owners of the lovesac fiero actually had great luck in the car and it was quite competitive.

fiero isnt a religious car for me, its merely a cheap platform that i feel being a mr setup will let me hone in on the driving i want to better in rally or any hard driving for that matter.

next is more chassis stiffening, and rollcage material will be arriving next week

and my planned first event is magnum opus in newberry, mi. its a simple one day event with day and night stages. my buddy Erik Hill who rally races now (due to building a new car) will be codriving for me and helping me through the event making sure everything is on track as much as possible

o and the hideous green...its mandatory for rally in my opinion..lol

heres one little update! also parts update...just received my foglights, ordered a hydro ebrake, and have my racing suit on the way!

used a tire bar welded has a t handle for use to not only screw down the spare but make it faster to change out the spare and store the tire bar easily.

...and essentially a Volkswagon (easy to work on)
Where is the  smiley?

I've always thought the Fiero was a neat, cheap car with plenty 'o potential.
Another cheap power upgrade is the Ecotec motor. They're available in various power levels from ~140hp up to ~260hp in the direct injected turbo flavors, they're readily available in everything from a cobalt to a HHS, its light weight being all aluminum construction, and they're not much more expensive than dirt.

My suggestion for a paint shceme:
