So I sold my forester today and am trying to see what would be a better choice.

I have a 94 Impreza L awd that runs great. But the trans is messed up. I can still drive it, just have to manually shift it, the AWD dont work, and it needs some other suspension work.

Now, I can buy a 99 Impreza Outback Sport for cheap thats in really nice shape, but the motor is shot.

I am wondering if it is possible to swap the motor from the 94 into the 99. I see all sorts of posts about people doing other swaps, but cant really find much on this one. Probably because its backwords of what everyone likes to do. lol.

But any help would be great. I have read there are some differences between phase 1 and phase 2 motors, but is that gonna make this a hell of a swap?

Thanks.

im running a 98-99rs ej25 in my 93, so i think it should work. if you have the engine harness that is the only thing that will need to be reworked to fit, that i know of.

absolutely! The ej22 ecu can run an ej18, and vice versa. However im not sure about an obd1 vs an obd2 swap. That would be more difficult. I would just check into buying another ej22 honestly, they go for cheap on cl. Ive sold 2 running ej22's out of project cars to the tune of 150 each (full long block).

I thought it over and I am actually gonna hold off on the Outback for a while. its gettin close to the holidays and I am gonna need the extra money to get back home.

Now if only i could get the trans straightened out in the Impreza. lol

Anyway, Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it.
