Pretty healthy calendar. If you ran every championship and both enduros and took a modest number of practice runs, I calcluated you'd get well over 2hrs of seat time!
I tried to simplify registration a little, seperating practices and championships, so hopefully it's easier to follow.

Good call Jay. I'm gonna sign up with SCCA for 2012 as I'm gonna try and do a few auto-x events too.

Entry fees for the 2012 season are a ways from being set. But one thing that will happen is the Non-SCCA fees will be $10 more than the SCCA member fee (was $5 in 2011).
good to know... im gonna sign up for next season

I'll be looking for Event Chair interns this year. This will include some of the event chair responsibilites for the weekend and real insite on what it takes to put these events on. Having an event chair intern will take some of the load off of me, and hopefully get some people capable of stepping up to be a full fledged event chair. If interested, e-mail me at woodrufj@jaycomservices.com.

Also, be mindful of the event entrants limits. My guess is we'll be flirting with the max numbers this year (like we were at last year's finale). The Championships are likely not to fill fast (but may still fill), but the Enduro events are pretty limited in the number of entrants we can take. If you want to participate in an enduro, I encurage signing up early.

woodrufj
12-29-2011, 11:59 AM
Basically an elevated stakes race. Contingencies ($$) available, and people tend to travel from farther. Two day's events combined into one result. It'll also act as two seperate series events (#2 & #3).

Other than that one contingency race is there any money to be won at any other events or the overall series??? This stuff gets expensive it would be nice to have a payout! Or at least an upgrade in the trophys...

$4 per driver goes into the season prize pot. More drivers in your class, the more your classes pot goes up. Last year we gave away $750 in cash plus jackets. That was for four champ events, next year we'll have five.
Last year's prize table is here:

As much as I love these events and have so much fun at them I just wish it was a little more rewarding. $4 per driver doesn't seem like much since a driver puts in $500 for the series and works the event which cuts the cost of employees.
It would be nice if the winner of the series at least won as much as they put into the series. I think that would produce a better turn out also. Just my opinion. I can't imagine the costs of putting it together being too crazy expensive...
Regardless these events are a blast and I will be attending as many as I can afford this year!

Do you know the fastest way to make one million dollars racing cars?
Start with two million...
It would cost more for us to race if the payout was higher. I thought it was cool this year getting a few bucks and a jacket.

01-17-2012, 10:50 AM
Having organized these events once upon a time you'd be surprised how expensive and time consuming it actually is. It was hard enough just to break even and we didn't give winners any money. Consider the money you might get from these events a bonus. Race for the love of racing an the competition not to get paid. If the costs are to much for you then don't do it or if you think you can do it better try. If everyone raced to get paid then grassroots motorsports wouldn't exist.

Just for some perspective that you obviously need. It cost over $9000 to put the three weekends on last year.
It would be nice if the winner of the series at least won as much as they put into the series. I think that would produce a better turn out also. Here's some logic for you. To give out more prize money, we'd need to raise the entry prize. The only ones to benifit from this are the podium winners, everyone else looses. The majority of people are realisitic and don't expect to podium. So for the majority of people, this is a losing proposition.
Sorry man, we're not pros. Just amatures looking for a good time.

By the way, I'm not going to push the advertising of the first event real hard until after Feb 19th (giving Ridgecrest it's screen time). But registration for both the Glen Helen practice and championship of Mar 10-11 is open. We've got a handful of practice entries and 12 champ entries already.
It is conceivable that we'll hit the limit of 70 drivers, so don't wait until the last minute.

Another "By the way", I've got quality flyers made up for the Glen Helen series. Plenty of them as well.
If some of you would like to distribute them to various acquaintances or club meets please contact me. Mailing them out is going to be too costly, but anyone can pick up a handful from my place in Huntington Beach, or meet me at my various haunts (Long Beach, Fontana, Irvine, El Toro, San Diego (QualCom)).
The Willow Springs event I went to had a huge Subaru turn out, I gave away at least 30 to interested parties there.
Thanks,

I like your positive thinking. And we can all use more events. You're as qualified as anyone else to put one on. It just takes time and energy and lots of people will help you with questions and such. Everyone has to have a first time. I look forward to attending your first "high payout" event.
BTW, my event at Johnson Valley a couple years ago cost under $1000. But times have changed.

Ya sorry guys I obviously had no idea. That's crazy it costs that much to rent out a flat space of dirt! Glen Helen must be making bank.
I wasn't talking bad about anyone or the way anything is run I was just curious. I just got into rally and don't know much about how events are run and all that yet obviously. Needless to say I am excited for this years events and hope I can make it to all of them. See you all there. Looking forward to seeing what Thomas can throw down in the P4 class!

This sounds like what it should be! I cant believe they charge so much to rent the space. Thats crazy... Lets all pitch in and buy some land and run our own events! That would be ideal right there. Too bad half of us are broke and can barely afford to fix our cars....... well thats me at least

Johnny, in addition to the rental of the property, you have to figure in the rental of the water truck and the tractor. I know Jay likes to fill his cooler so nobody goes thirsty. Then figure gas to and from the event for Jay, the tractor and the water truck, including the generator to run the computer, timing, etc. I am not sure but I would also assume that it costs to fill the water truck with water. There is probably a bunch more stuff that I haven't even mentioned.

The other big ticket items are sanction/insurance. Minimum of $120 but typically about $8 per person (not including any membership fees) so this can be up to $4-500 or so.
A venue typically is around $1K - maybe $750. It's been a while since I rented Glen Helen. The venue does have to pay someone to come after us and re-grade all the ruts and stuff out.
As Pret noted, Jay doesn't live next door to GH and his van sucks fuel (this I know) so to drive it from Irvine to GH, towing a vehicle, and all those cones (which weigh a LOT) . . .
And he's not even including his capital costs. He bought that van specifically to house the cones which he bought so he could organize races like ours. . . and then his timing system, the computers . . . yeah.
Honestly, it's the main reason I got out of organizing.
lminette
01-18-2012, 08:42 AM
Yeah the closer you are to civilization the more the land costs. Glen Helen is the closest venue we've got who's pricing is still feasable. Irvine lake area wants somewhere in the neighboorhood of 2 g's a day to use their land. Plus you have to take into account the surrounding area and whether the inhabitants will pitch a fit if loud ass cars are tearing it up within ear shot all day.

01-18-2012, 09:52 AM
I had no idea it was that much!!! Thats insane! Someone needs to talk some sense into Glen Helen!Due to the diligance of previous organizers (Dave, Louie and Mike), the actual venue fee is a great deal. San Diego didn't work as hard on their venue and would need to pay 4x as much for Chula Vista, which is the main reason there are no events down there.
Events in simpler areas with simpler ammentities can be put on at lower cost, but then you cut the entry and lose entrants, i.e. what Johnson Valley used to be (required expence has gone way up). So it's all a balance.

Ha, nice, can't wait to see the rally miata. I will be running winterforces this season too. What do you recommend for tire pressure on them as I heard the sidewalls are a tad soft?

What do you recommend for tire pressure on them as I heard the sidewalls are a tad soft? I'd go a little higher than street pressures. Your car is much heavier than my current and past, maybe top out at 40, see if you could get away with 35. I'm going to start with 35, see if I can get down to 32.
I could feel them flex a lot (aspect ratio of 70 though), but the only time I had a problem was when I got caught in a hard rut at Hastings (known for epic ruts).
Also Jay, let me know if you need help with any of the upcoming events.I'm sure I will. Thanks.

"Factory Hardtop" is required on convertables. Not a whole lot of convertable availible with a FACTORY hardtop, but Miata's are, and they're common (although relatively expensive).
Rollbar not required, but obviously recommended. The fiberglass roof isn't going to provide much protection. That said, my roll bar is probably going to come out anyways for weight reasons.
Jay W
SoCalBoomer
01-19-2012, 08:31 AM
The reason for the "hardtop" btw instead of just the rollbar is that because we're not playing on a hard surface, the rollbar can (and likely would) dig into the dirt and not really provide much (if any) protection while a hardtop (of some sort) would skid and provide protection from rocks and digging in. :D
@Pret - it's just as important to make sure you're not going SIDEWAYS INTO a rut with soft sidewall tires. :D
What do you recommend for tire pressure on them as I heard the sidewalls are a tad soft
I debeaded at Ridgecrest at 42psi. But that Evo was a porker at 3600 lbs. After that failure, I ran tubes. That let me get down to the high 20's without drama.

Jay, whats the rules with the tires? I can't find it and I just wanted to make sure my understanding was correct as somebody asked me and I didn't want to give them bad information.
IIRC for most GH events, except the national challenge event
S2/S4 DOT approved street tires only
P2/P4 any DOT approved street tire including snow tires
M2/M4 Any tire including gravel/rally tires
Then for the national challenge event...
Stock classes can use any DOT approved tire
Rally Prep Classes can use any tire except home built studded tires
Rally Modified Classes can use any tire except homebuilt studded tires
This is how I understand it, am i correct?
woodrufj
01-21-2012, 10:41 AM
Jay, whats the rules with the tires? That was last year's rule you were quoting. This year we're going straight to the SCCA book. Stock = Any DOT, unaltered without things like "For competition only", Prep = Mod = Any tire. Alternatively if someone wanted to enter a 'CRS' preped car, they're stuck with CRS restrictions. This really only effects Prep class. If some turbos and strips their car and calls it an CRS Street Mod, then they'll need to run CRS limited snow tires or lesser to run in Prep.
