View Full Version : Lights and bar?

Ok, its getting that time of year again, where an old jolly man comes down your chimney with a bag full of goodies.
Anyway, I want a light bar and lights for my 01 RS. i was hopin to get one that makes the lights about even with the headlights (unlike rally innovations)
just need some suggestions as to what is a good light bar, and which lights will make night become day!! (should i go with 2 or 4 lights?)
Thanks!

I'd go with two pencil and two driving lights, good penetration and spread.

^^ haha, thats kinda what i was thinking. any idea on the best light set up? i was thinking PIAA, but im not familier with diffrant models and the way they project.

That's what I have....I'd pm fattie to see if he can make you one. I bought mine off him, one of the first and the thing is rock solid.
I have KC slim lights, and they're awesome too. 2 fog lights and 2 driving lights. I have kc pencil beams and they're a really narrow beam.

my understanding is that rally innovations can do fabrication (i've seen at least one bugeye over on nasioc in the ultimate lighting thread with a custom front lightbar built by them) but i'm not sure what kinda coin you are talking about.

As for lights, I'd say to go with Hella's. You will get PIAA quality light at about half the price. And unless you're doing salt flat runs at night then I think the pencil beams aren't really worth it. A set of FF1000's will give you useful light out over a 1/4 mile, at 60 mph that is 15 seconds in front of you. Jump to the Rallye 4000's and the eurobeams give you almost 1/2 mile.
I'd say get a set of good driving pattern and then a set of cornering. The cornering set can also double as extra fogs.

I have the pencil beams, and they make for a great combination with your highbeams so long as your highbeams have good spread.
wolfman79
12-22-2007, 12:13 AM
But which pencil beams do you have?
Some of the newer driving/euro beams have nearly the same reach that many pencil beams do, just with a much better spread and at much greater distances than your stock hi beams cover.

I actually like that design. Simple and clean. Most importantly it should be fairly easy to replicate/alter to suit individual cars.
RS-ti_Andy
12-22-2007, 12:27 AM
thats what i said! or we can recreate it!.. buy one.. when we get measure it all up.. send it back saying the car was wrecked and then make it for like $25!
wolfman79
12-22-2007, 12:32 AM
Well judging by their website I'm not sure if they are even around. And materials for that set-up are going to run closer to $75 minimum then you have labor and r&d to factor in. I'll see about mocking something up this weekend but I'll have to figure out where they mounted it at.

just the 500's. they do a decent job for the money.
And Andy, good find, I like that bar as well.
Now if only the price was a tad lower.
I agree that it looks simple enough to replicate.
RS-ti_Andy
12-22-2007, 12:35 AM
yeah cause they gave it away.. they said it mounts to stock locations.. so all we need to do is find out what locations they are talking about and go from there..

500's are great lights for the money. If you are looking to upgrade any time soon I'd recommend the FF1000's, they put out almost twice the light as the 500's and rallylights.com has them on special right now.
As far as the stock mounting locations go, the GC/GF body cars are more difficult to work with because of our quirky radiator supports, the GD/GG body is much easier since the upper rad supports are centered in the chasis. But we'll see what happens.

Im looking to take a set of the FF1000's off of fattie92 here in the next week... I already have an extra set of hella 500 pencil beams that I snagged for free (thanks to kreitz3), so I'd probably do 2 500's and 2 1000's, and keep the extra 500's as spares.

Spares?!?!
Mount those suckers up, more is better. A couple of guys over on Nabisco are running like 10 lamps in addition to stock and can/do fire them all up at once. Your alternator can handle it (well for a little while at a time anyway) and your eyes will definitely thank you for it. Just make sure to have a master kill switch so you can dip your lights for oncoming traffic/aircraft on approach.

just get a large relay... and a capasitor setup in series? then it will save your battery and altenator.. u know the same way a capasitor saves the components for a larg stereo system.. thats what my friend in his jeep did, he has 4 baja rectangle lights on top, 2 KC 500's centered in the grill area, his 2 head lights, and his 2 stock foglights... runas all 10 lights off of that configuration and can run more

LOL I love the aux lighting thread.
It may be time to upgrade...
Hey Aaron, can I trade 6 of my lights for one of your soltek lights? :muhaha:
I believe if you wire capacitors in series, you reduce their overall capacitance... You want to wire them in parallel to increase capacitance. Its the opposite of wiring resistors in series vs parallel

Well I completely forgot to mention Lightforce lights. They are a little pricier than Hella but they also give you the ability to switch beam patterns.
If I decide to go all out with the OBS then I think a set or two of those just might end up on there.

Yeah I think almost all of us have done the 500's at one point or another. I've got some sitting in the closet right now waiting for me to mount them up. They are great "little" lights. I am just throwing out other alternatives to the 500's and PIAA's.

I had been bugging fattie about borrowing someone to do GC measurements, but it doesn't seem to be happenin'! No biggie though.
Anyway, after the holiday madness dies down ill be getting the light bar made. Super simple design, as i have three requirements.
1) little to no light shake
2) will survive a decent front end impact from a jump / dirt berm / snowbank
3) front bumper can be removed without moving the lightbar.
Im anxious to make it happen. Oh yeah and im surprised you haven't guessed whos making it? Jackson Rally of course. Hes already got a bar for the GD lined up. I haven't seen it yet but i know whos getting it!

I tryed emailing, but the email was dissconnected. i love the look of this set up. i like the slight arch to the lights too. so, either a good set of coronering lights paired with hella 500's, or the more badass 500's and 1000's for a little more bank.
from the sounds of it there arent really that many light bars like te one above. Paul at primative said he could make me that one for a fair price, but im not sure about the estetics of it...

This is why you don't see lights on top of any rally cars; at least at Rally America events.
From the Rally America Rule Book:
1. Headlights (high and low beams), parking lights. The base of any auxiliary driving light may not be higher than the lowest point of the front windshield.
a. If the rally includes night stages, the car shall be presented to scrutineering with any auxiliary lights to be used during the event. The allowable number of forward facing lights is 8. This includes OEM headlights and fog lamps. Regardless of design, OEM headlights (both high and low beam) count as 2. OEM fog/driving lamps are additional. Unmodified turn signals, parking and daytime running lights (whether separate or integral to the OEM low/high beam unit) are not counted.

Adding capacitance will help absorb voltage spikes, which is why they are so useful for stereos...when the bass hits, it draws a lot more power for a short period of time, which would dip the voltage if not for the cap.
There is no real benefit to adding capacitance to a lighting circuit that is drawing constant power. the caps will bleed off any voltage they have stored up if they are actually being used, and your lighting will just get dimmer until its like you have no cap...and thats assuming you drove without the lights on for long enough to charge the cap. the only way a cap could really benefit is if your alternator is at its limit and other electrical devices in the car are causing your voltage, and in turn your lighting, to fluctuate. but then you really want a bigger alternator, not a cap.

Has anyone ever found a light bar for a BE/BH chassis? I think I want a radiator mount, but anything solid would be worth looking at.
I'm trying to figure out if I need to design one, or if there are already options out there. I can't seem to find any. Every subaru model seems to have them except for the Legacy...
