So its been a while since I posted anything. I think my last post was my intro with Pics of my Bug eye wagon. I love this car! anyway, I really wanted to mount my lights that I had on my jeep but I'm broke beyond broke and cant afford one of the cool RI light bars for $300+. So I went the El Cheepo route and did an angle bracket bolted through the bumper beam. I was able to mount my 4 rally lights on that then replaced the stock fogs with my Yellow Hellas. I get no light bounce from the 2 top mounted ones or my fogs. I get some bounce from the 2 mounted under the bracket. I can live with it for now. I figured you guys would appreciate this a bit more then NASIOC..... And I Know, I know, ITS NOT DIRTY ENOUGH!.. I fully agree I'm limited to gravel roads around here. I'm still new to the off road Subaru scene here in Minneapolis and I'm not sure where to "Play". Any Who, let me know what ya'll think. I do understand not all will like it. I'm ok with that

looks great man!! looks almost identical to mine. what did you use? just L bracket? you should be able to figure out a way to brace the two on the bottom from behind to limit shake. nice work on your budget light bar!!

Nice. Any way you can brace the bottom two lights with angle that runs down to the bottom of the radiator core support? I'm assuming the bottom two are driving pattern lights, how's the light pattern with them mounted that low?

Really? I know you guys are super excited about your new lights, but did you even read the guy's post or just go straight into advertisement mode? Why would he go and spend a minimum of $100 per LED light when all he's trying to do is get a cheap bar to mount lights he already owns?

Thank you! Yup just an aluminium L bracket and some long bolts.

Thanks for the advice. I will have to try that. And yes the bottom 2 are driving pattern but I have them aimed a bit up and to the sides for seeing into the ditches. I commute at night and am always on the look out for deer. They are 100w each (400w total) when I light them up I can see a good distance. I dont even bother with my High beams the rally's cancel them out.

Thanks!. I checked out your lights. They would for sure look cool on my car. AND I would be the only bug eye around here (that I know of) with that set up. I already had the lights and wiring from my jeep and to mount them was only a few bucks with the poor boy bracket I did. Once I get some other items crossed off my wish list, I will be looking a bit closer into your product. I think It would look really clean.

Looks like a really good setup for going the cheap route. Not knocking your setup at all, but if you really dump the front end, those lower ones (on the inside) might hit the ground. Take a look at people's front plates that get bent and you'll get an idea of how far up things get tweaked.
If you're just going to cruise around, explore trails, and maybe throw it sideways from time to time, you'll be alright :)

Not taken as a Knock at all. I thought about that as well! Its my DD/Weekend warrior so I cant drive it like I want to if you get my meaning. Pavement:jack:, Gravel and any chance I get to.... Sideways... is its fate (for now).

thanks for checking out our shiz, i didnt mean to sound pushy... we love to see all the homemade lightbars and budget lighting builds, i simply wanted you to know that we are a much more affordable version of the LED lightbars. Good luck with the rest of your build!

Right on. its that ONE hole that catches you off guard though! Hopefully with the lights you'll see it coming.
Only thing with bright lights in pitch dark is that every bump and dip looks humongous.

I just have 2 lights so far, and they're mounted about as far apart as your lower ones. (actually now thinking about getting a LED bar for in between them...if I ever get extra light moneys).
They shook too on the test drive and I think it was just because there's too much flex in the angle stock to support the light with the only mounting point at the license plate holes. My solution was to double up the angle pieces by nesting two lengths together to basically double the thickness of the light bar. They don't shake anymore.

if you can live without your grill when you run your lights you an use the holes on top of your bumper beam for extra support. this will help to eliminate light bounce

Awesome setup. do you have the lowers on a separate switch from the tops? if you go on a group dirt drive its a nice feature to have (sometimes 1 set will work better than the other when its dusty, or if driving in the snow)
the lower ones are more likely to be damage if you are pushing your car hard over ruts, dips, jumps, or make a driving boo boo into a berm but meh.. I loves me cheap setups!
all the recent threads about after market lights makes me want to come up with a standardized test / photo that we can all take to compare our lighting setups...
I need to find some cheap objects at walmart (like dixie cups) that anyone on DI across the US can buy for super cheap. then you set them up at like every 100 feet and take a photo and that will show how far out you can see well.... (minor thread jack sorry)
hehehe :)

That would be sweet if we could get a lot of people in on this! Only issue is that the exposure time and F-stop should be the same for each photo to get the best picture of how the lights are performing.

exposure time .. i know what that is , but not how to change it (droid and a digi cam from 2000) F-stop ... uhm... ?!? lost me there...

lol ya I noticed that too when I put them on my subie. Didnt notice that that effect on the jeep. Most likely because they sat higher up off the road and had more of a top down then lower straight on.

Thanks! The lights are all wired together on one switch. I commute at night and wanted to keep it simple when i'm on the backroads and I meet the random on coming traffic. One switch is quicker then 3 lol.
I also love the idea of a standard lights test. I see lots of nice pics and you can see a diffrence but with out knowing the location, theres no frame of reffrence.

Yeah, that's exactly it. It's all about the shadows they cast. Low mounted lights cast really long shadows, which exaggerates the size of the bumps and dips. Can be useful, you just need to recalibrate your judgment :)

Yeah I like this idea as well.

F-stop describes how much light the lense is letting in by adjusting the aperture of the lens (much like the way your pupil dialates in low light situations and contracts when you look at bright objects). The higher the F-stop number the smaller the lens aperture. In addition, F-stop controls depth of field, where a higher F-stop will allow you to have more objects in focus across a range of distance.
I haven't found any droid camera apps that actually let you control these, but your digi cam might have a manual mode where you can set these.
Either way, a standardized test (even with auto exposure settings) is better than nothing!
