Currently, I have Crucial Racing Springs w/stock struts. But I want to go back to stock springs with a firmer strut. AGXs come to mind, but does anyone have experience with Tokico D-Specs or know how they would handle rally-x? Or Koni Inserts?

TEIN gravel coilovers are actually pretty decent....I've seen them in use on stage rallies. Cheaper than DMS or rs&sp.
Their next level of suspension set ups are around $10k!

A guy at GST Motorsports recommended the Tein HG's. They are mainly a street tuning shop, but they have built 10 rally cars. I have been considering this option. I emailed All Wheels Driven and am waiting to see what they offer.
I am running stock struts and springs with Cobb sways and endlinks.

As much as GST recommends stuff for us and know their stuff for the street, they know nothing about rally. I would take their dirt advice with a grain of salt.

tien HG specs to me sound more like a good all round street/auto-x/DD/rally setup, prolly too stiff for JUST gravel...
I never heard of GST.. but any street tuner shop really woulnt know too much about rally.. they are prolly just trying to sell their heavily marked up Tein suspensions...

My point exactly, GST is a local shop with an online store here in the bay area. When I went and talked to them not only did they not sell rally parts they did not know hardly anything about the sport.

Stock stock and stock, the only suspension piece I have is a replacement lower subframe brace, and only then cos the downpipe wouldn't fit under the stock one. Stock is fine for rallyx.

I figured that GST didn't know to much about rally but I still thought that I should at least look at the Tein HG's. As BlackParis mentioned, they seem like a more all around setup. Since GST is a street shop the only thing I could possibly see them helping me with is a tune and a cage.

I would suggest you save your money in regards to the Tein stuff and either buy a set of pedder's from LandE or continue to save and buy something better. About a cage...I dunno if I would want them making a cage either. That's something that if you're gonna do that you might as well get it built it to Rally America spec, and if you're going that far I would go to someone who does it all the time. Basically if you're gonna be building a rally car for the first time I would do it right and take it to someone who does it all the time, which means be prepared to travel or ship your car off. Closest I know of to the bay area, Primitive Racing, is near Portland, OR.

they do great. these ones are a 'custom' build for gravel. however, they are still not quite set up right (too stiff)

would upgrading to a set of wagon specific sti pinks (usdm so i dont kill my struts) be a good mod for the street/dirt? need to keep it cheap

what kind of spring rates/lengths are you running? i'm pretty sure mine are gonna be too stiff for the dirt. car feels like it has sway bars with just the coilovers on...

man... seems that there are all sorts of GST haters in here lol. they may not make "rally" cars but that doesn't mean they don't know subarus. their time attack L is stupid fast and Mike knows more about the subaru power train than anyone i've ever spoken to.
just thought i'd add my two cents.
as for my setup i'm runing the same as debbid, crucial springs and stock struts.

Hardly hating.. nobody said they didn't know Subarus - they plainly do, their cars are awesome. But this thread is about suspension setups which are suitable for rally/rallycross.. what's being said is that if you're looking for advice about rally suspension then you're unlikely to go to them, any more than you'd go to Placar to get advice about building a time attack car (unless Scott is making those now too :D )

I would say no just cause they lower the car a bit. The stiffer springs is somewhat helpful, but the ride height is where they suck.

I ran pink springs for 3/4 of the rally cross season this year and they were fine... although not ideal. Watch that back end, it sits really low. The front is definitely fine though

You could look into getting Forester pinks. Those would actually raise your ride height slightly and you'd still get the benefit of the higher spring rate. That is what we are looking at doing for the OBS next year. Our current plan is to run Leggie OB struts with Forester pinks. It should give us about a 1.75" lift and a much better spring rate. The struts can handle the lift and the higher rate as they are meant for a heavier and taller car.

12-25-2007, 10:14 AM
do you think for an occasional screwing around in the desert/woods sti pinks would be ok or no? trying to avoid lifting car to much over stock
wolfman79
12-25-2007, 10:30 AM
I think the pinks would be alright for the occasional dirty work. The rates are fine it is the height that gives most people pause. If I'm not mistaken Subaru uses the pinks on the Group N cars, so that should give an idea of their suitability to unpaved conditions. The key difference is that the Grp N cars are equipped to take the undercarriage abuse.
For my money I think you could go two ways here. Either the pinks and skidplates f/r(good stuff 3/16") or get a set of GC coilover sleeves. With the GC's you could have equal spring rates to the pinks plus have adjustability to raise ride height prior to your "rally" driving.

what exactlly are gc coilover sleeves? and wouldnt they not fit cause of the difference in years?
wolfman79
12-27-2007, 07:07 AM
Ground Control coilover sleeves, they allow you to adjust the ride height of the car. They work with your existing struts, and are similar in function to a true coilover set up. You can get them in sizes to fit nearly every year car/strut combo. Ground Control or one of their retailers could help you pick the right set up for your application and desired use if you talk to them.

Want these
I happen to have a set of STi Spec C gravel struts from a British Spec C brought over by Simon that used to be with Prodrive - meaning they are essentially the same as the struts from a USDM STi. They are surprisingly smooth on stutter bumps and ruts, they also have close to the same spring rates used on most gravel coil overs for the GD Impreza's. Unfortunately, it has the ubiquitous box of rocks sound from the right side which can be cured by slathering grease on the dust seal.
Having said all that, what I'd really like are the Tein HG gravel coilovers.

In the 2000 RS (pic in sig.) KYB AGX's 350lb 12inch front coils and 250lb 10 inch rears with Ground control adjusters f &r.
The '93 is still stock and will be custom built for hard jumping:eek:
The '08 will have by the end of this week, G.C. adjusters and 12inch 350lb coils with stock stuts in the front. Rear will have (most likely) stock springs and struts with modified arm with multible bottom shock mount holes. This will all be redone with Bilstien struts as soon as I can get the time to do the R&D with the Bilstien guys.

Well, I'm done with suspension for a while:
2000 Forester Struts/springs
RalliTek adjustable rear sway kit (endlinks are beefy)
Whiteline front endlinks
Winterforce 215/60/15-about a 1/2 taller than 205s
With the Front stock 19mm and the rear set up at 19.5 (yeah-depending on which hole you mount it on you can have 19, 19.5, 20,20.5, or 21). Anyway, it is very balanced-good for winter I'd think.
Oh, it was like -1F this morning taking the frosty pics.
