Hi I am new to the form... Well I am also new to Subaru in a hole I have had my car one day over a month now and love it so much its an amazing peace of engineering. But with everything there is always room for improvement. And its about to begin.....
But I need some advice. First of its a 2011 Impreza Touring. My plans are to lift it and I have been thinking of running the K sport Rally Spec GR Damper System suspension which so far seam to be the best bang for buck out there at the moment. Though I am open to other ideas I just don't want to brake the bank.
But before the coil overs I am looking at anti-sway bars and am having a tough time deciding what size to go with I love the feeling of a flat car that corners amazingly. I want to get rid of under steer and stay away from over steer.
I also am on lots of gravel roads and in the winter ice and snow roads. In the summer I often have my river kayaks strapped to the top and in the winter its snowboards or back country skis all loaded up for a weekend in the back country. I also don't find my self driving like a "Granny" down these roads often 80-100kms an hour is a normal pace. I do also love driving fast on and tight on pavement which I know is a totally different ball game but trying to get around and play everywhere in a daily driver some times is tough. I don't mind a bit of a rougher ride or stiffer ride as long as it is stable and will take the corners well..
So now that I have given all the information on what the car is going to be used for any suggestions would be great.
Thanks for your time

All points:
i have been looking into the same mod. looks to me that my 2010 has a 16mm front swaybar already. From the reading ive done alot of STI folks are upgrading them selves as high as 21mm Front 25mm Rear.
Im by no means an expert though and just sharing what ive gathered. Alot of people seem to suggest trying to grab a sti oem set from someone that had just upgraded as a full the pair of bars should be around 100-120
I would love to see the chatter on this topic though im very interested.

A thicker, stronger sway bar is going to make the car really rough on those gravel roads, but will neutral out the car on the pavement. It depends on what you want to do more.
For rally/rallycross/off-roading, most people remove their rear sway bar, and keep the stock front sway bar, or remove it as well.

Interesting, i know a bit about the positives to having swaybars but not the negatives. I wouldn't be-able to explain my self well either.
Would you suggest any good reading.

For the off-road stuff, search the technical forum for swaybar info, for on-road, give NASIOC a search.

I, personally, have a Perrin RSB on my car with Kartboy solid endlinks, and I LOVE it for tarmac driving. It neutralled the car out so much, that with a good flick I oversteer and rotate very nicely.
I plan on completely removing it for the rallycross.
FSB is a different story, it is mostly for assisting in turn-in. Again, it isn't really needed on dirt/lose surfaces as it will limit the amount of travel for the suspension, however on the road you will notice a HUGE difference in initial turn-in without a FSB.

I have a 27mm front sway on my STI with the stock 20 mm rear. its understeerish for sure, BUT now i can brake really late / trail brake to induce oversteer . usually i brake + gas so I'm "Trail brake turbo spooling" so as the car is rotating the boost is building
works amazing on gravel / snow . sets good times at autocross doing that (though the rear end doesn't step out dramatically it does get free)
I would avoid setting your car up to be "steady state oversteerish" on pavement if you plan to do a lot of dirt and snow driving. I'de shoot for neutral , or a hair of understeer on pavement , you should be able to kick it free with a little practice on dirt and snow. :)

yeah my bad i was looking at the full kit
http://www.perrinperformance.com/subaru/subaru-wrx-sway-bar-combo
the bar it self is ~ 200

I hear that the perrin sway bars can get annoying as they are noisy if not greased all the time, something to do with the plastic busing, id have to look for the OP to confirm. i know my OEM bars are silent as the dead.
Can anyone chime in?

Dug around and the stock 09 wrx has rates of 21 and 19 for the sway bars. It would cost 200 for the dealer so used it could be cheaper compared to new ones from the aftermarket

i took my perrin rsb and links off... the links were making a terrible metal on metal screeching noise anytime the car hit a bump. i still have the fsb and links on, they are noisy, but only from inside the car. the noise i was getting was from the endlinks, not the bushings.. hope that helps a touch
