car: 1993 impreza LX 2.2l

how it started: backed the car out of the garage to wash it, rolled up the windows and as the windows reached the top... the engine died! so i went to restart it and the fuel pump was not working.

i went through the fuses and found that the only one blown was the second 30amp, which apparently runs just about everything! checked the ohms of every fuse, checked voltage at the battery and at the fuel pump, everything showed up normal.

SO, replaced the 30amp fuse and walah the car started right up, but as soon as i put it in gear and let the clutch out, THE ENGINE DIES!!!http://www.rs25.com/forums/images/smilies/zbanghead.gif
which i did 3 more times just to be sure lol

ANYONE KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT?

What else have you done? Or possibly bumped? If its popping the fuse in the same manner there is a short to ground.

Try it again but put it in 2nd gear and slowly let out the clutch. If it doesn't die, you might have the shifter or some part of the linkage causing a short when in 1st gear. Just my 2¢ if I had to take a shot in the dark...

it happens for sure in reverse, but only when i let the clutch out... i can shift into any gear with the clutch in and no problems. BUT at $4 a fuse i want to find the rpoblem before blowing the fuse again.

but only when i let the clutch out...
If the car runs fine with the clutch in,and only craps on the biscuit when when you let it out, it could be the clutch switch circuit. The clutch has a switch that makes sure you can't start it without the clutch in. The switch is located on top of the clutch pedal. I imagine its a short to ground in this circuit.

This is actually my car.

I put a new fuse in, let the car idle for 5 minutes. Reved it up several times and then let it sit at 3K rpms for 15 seconds. I pushed the clutch in and out several times. Then with the clutch held down I shifted between all the gears.

None of this makes the fuse blow.
I put a new fuel pump in today and cleaned the connection at the pump.
As soon as I start letting the clutch out to move forward the car dies.
Fuse blown again. Fuel pump then does not prime, the car will crank but will not start.

No clue where to go from here.

Can you have some one help you? I honestly can't think of what would cause this, but maybe if you can put the car on stands (all four corners duh), and have somebody standing outside while you try to get the car in gear they can help you narrow it down?

I'm new to Subarus, and I could be talking out my ass, but some newer vehicles with manual transmissions adjust the a/f or throttle position as you start off in first gear (or maybe all gears?) to make the shift smoother, maybe there's a problem with the ECU or FI system?

Please do tell when you figure it out.

Make sure your oxygen sensor wiring isn't melted and grounded out on the transmission. My car died when the harness melted and shorted to ground and blew the same fuse over and over again.

I did a quick look under the car last week but wasn't able to REALLY get under there.
I have a creepy crawler and I am going to lay under the car and check all the wires I can find. I think I am also going to get a wire brush and some paint and make sure all the ground connections are clean underneath as well as paint them after so they don't rust or have corrosion later on.

I will check the O2 Sensor. The car just dies SO fast... it's instant as soon as you start to feel the clutch contact the flywheel...BAM dead.

You sir are awesome.

Turns out the front oxygen sensor wire somehow came into contact with the axle and it wore through the sheathing. I am guessing that when load was on the car it would push the axle down just slightly (or the trans in general) and bam the wire would short.

All fixed now, took it around the block... glad to have my car running again.
