I'm sure its been done. Found a cheap outback but no transmission it calls for AT but was wondering on a scale of 1-10 difficulty of swapping in a 5speed. Any advice, disclaimer lol or anything?

Very doable. its not a 1-3 probably more into the 6-7 area.
I've done brake pads, calipers, brake lines, suspension , shock inserts into factory struts, power steering, starters, batteries, fuse replacement, rally driving lights wired only for hi-beams, radios, speakers, amps...
but a AT to MT conversion is a bit beyond me.
what year car? it may require a harness and ecu swap as well

Excuse me its a 95 impreza, lady had her facts all messed up lol. Found it on Craigslist got the Guy down to 1k (assuming decent price). Has 90k miles nice looking Subaru. Yeah this would b my first transmission swap so kinda skeptical. Think a local garage or something would be better suited for this?

Its doable. 90k on a 95 is hard to come by. the big thing would be getting all the parts for it. definatly looking on a couple trips to a pull and pay, maybe take a look at where everything is mounted. and check out the gearing as well, i believe AT to MT usually have different final drives. The actual work itself wouldnt be too rough, but making sure everything works correctly is a different story

I've done the swap both ways and either way I would reccommend getting a parts car so you have everything you need right there
So there are really only 2 routes you should go with this mod; Minimal and Complete
Minimal: is how I did my first swap and it's as easy as it gets. Electrical mods are: jumping the ignition key release with a screw and taping the gear selector switch to neutral. Mechanical mods are: turning the idle adjustment down until it doesn't drop below 500 rpm, swapping the trans/clutch & diff etc.
Pros: Easy as ****, cheapest route
Cons: No ABS, Can start in gear, won't start if gear selector slips out of "N"

Complete: My current setup, just like it came from the factory. Electrical mods are: swapping the entire ECU main harness. Mechanical mods are: Swapping the ABS pump, trans/clutch & diff etc.
Pros: Complete reliability, all OEM fuctions retained
Cons: Difficult to swap harness through small hole, more expensive
