Maybe I'm missing something - looks like the cylinders are about 70deg from the bank on the far side.

Drive Performance article on Subaru F1 (http://www.driveperformancesubaru.com/version4_3/formula_one.asp)

It was a miserable failure, Coloni were one of the also-ran teams. But kudos for giving it a shot. I can't find any video of the car running.. I wanna hear it :)

How the Subaru WRC team started:

"Hey it might be going backwards, but it looks pretty good in the gravel.. maybe we should give up on F1 and go rallying instead!"

I dunno even where to start with that.. the engine in the BB512i was originally designed by Ferrari in 1971 and it was a 5 litre. It was a road car engine, and they stopped making it in 1984..

The engine in the Subaru-Coloni F1 car was a 3.5 litre racing unit, commissioned in 1988 by FHI and designed by Carlo Chiti, who worked for Motori Moderni - an Italian engine builder.

The "Enzo" who owned the 49% of the team was Enzo Coloni.. not Enzo Ferrari. Different guy.

So.. yes, it was a flat/boxer 12, yes it was Italian, yes there was a guy named Enzo involved.. but no way is it the same engine as the BB512i.

The Ferrari in the vid sounded awesome though...

3.5 liter engine at ~19000 RPM = not weak!

IIRC current F1 engines are 2.4 liter v8s producing 750 bhp
