I own a 1996 OBW, and I recently installed rear struts from a 97-98 legacy outback (didn't have enough money for fronts, but needed rears). The rear struts were a b***h. Do the front struts from a legacy outback fit on my car without the need to drill any new holes for the tophats?

There's a writeup on this very subject, and it seems to have been covered many times... To do the rears, you can either A) Drill new holes, or B) Replace the tophats with Impreza ones. Not that it helps you much now, but c'est la vie.
As for the fronts, if they're anything like the Forester struts (which I believe they are), they should bolt right in.

Thank you! i will search for this write-up and hopefully the fronts are like the forester struts. lol that would be so easy ;)

The fronts will be the same. If you have a 96' OBW and put rear struts from a 97-98 OB why did you need to drill new holes? The bolt pattern should be the same through all 96 to 99 Legacies, Outback or not. They are the same as Foresters and WRX's up to 07/08.
*Edit: nevermind, I see now that its a OBS, not a OBW. (Outback Sport-->Outback Wagon).

Yeah check my build thread, I believe I did a write up on this but yeah you need to use the GC tophats.

So i'd need to use my tophats in order to make the front struts from a legacy outback fit on my car?
