We have the 98 2.2L auto Impreza wagon that last year the speed sensor sezed up in and riped apart the speed gears inside on the trans. We were woundering how hard would it be to take out this trans. and replace the speed grears or if its better to leave it or try to fine a used one. This car has 160k on the odm. when it broke and we think now it has over 200k. This Subaru has some history to it like having a plate glass window fall on it from 2 storys up and all it did was chip the paint and brake the windshield. We also think this car is in limp mode because it has a 4500 RPM redline now. The only things we have replaced on this car is 2 front axles, brakes and the Driverside door it was a accident. We think at one time the e-diff. was going in this car so it was FWD for a some time till I pulled the fuse and it was fixed.

I Like It Sideways

I do believe without the speed sensor input the car will run in "limp mode".

If you are talking about replacing the speed sensor itself, I don't think it's all that difficult. Someone with more experience can chime in. However, opening up the transmission, I wouldn't know a thing about.

Sounds like the car has been quite the trooper!

Now this little 2.2L has a idle control problem it is idling at about 1800 rpms when sitting in park then you put it in drive it goes down the 1000 rpms I looked at the vacum lines and they seemed to be fine. There were 5 DTC in it P0122 Throttle Position sensor, P0325 Knock Sensor, P0500 speed sensor. P1507 idle control system, and P1540 another speed sensor. What parts could be making this idle at the crazy rpms? This all started when my dad and I were heading some were and the car sputered and died at a stop sign, then it ran bad till we got to the local transfer station were I shut off the car, When I restarted the car it ran like nothing had happen just with the high idle and it ran like this all day. I do have a OBD2 code Reader and aa program on my Ipod touch that tells me what the code is. I keep a close eye on this car with it.
