I am building a 1998 2.5rs for rally. I am building it for a stage/ uphill climb rally car next year, but this year i would like to rallyx it. I have money for everything but my engine build, so i plan on rallyx this summer and yankin the engine in the fall to build it. Anyways ive got about 1000 to spend on it for rallyx and was wondering what my best way to go was. Ive already got full exhaust and headers comin in. its a ej20 turbo out of a 1999 JDM sti type R. Ive also go the type R drivetrain behind it with 4.44FD. Let me know what you all think.

Keep engine stock and spend $ somewhere else...
JDM STI engine is REALLY good even in stock.
and for rallyX - you DON'T need more power than it already have...
Hell even WRX is good too.
Work on suspensions, tires, skidplate, brakes.
yes leave the engine alone it will be plenty enough power for your needs at this time. Im personally planning a 97 ej20k swap into my 95L next year, using this year to get used to driving the car with less power and im actually pretty competitive with just the 2.2L n/a.
But i also have kyb agx struts, eibach pro kit springs (not recomended for rallyx, the car was originally built for autox) and upgraded brakes (RS spec brakes which you already have)
But if you want to stage rally/hill climb you are most likely going to need more than $1000 on suspension. Though a good start, IMO would be kyb agx struts with slightly stiffer/taller springs, they do very well for rallyx. Im sure someone will disagree with me but from experience the kyb struts are perfectly adequate for a rallyx car.

The above answers are good, even if they aren't really what you want to hear. But honestly, you'll learn more with less HP than with more.

cool, thats exactly what i wanted to here. i already dropped like 5g on suspension. i got tein HG struts, anti lift kit, roll center kit, adjustable lateral links. looking into a weld in prebent cage. wheres a good place for skid plates? or just i fab some myself... also im not sure which way to go on brakes, thinking of the 4/2pot wrx...but is that going to be enough for when i stage rally? id rather only buy one set, and if i need something bigger then ill wait till the fall.
^primitive racing is great for skidplates. make sure you tell them exactly what your car is so they can ensure the plate will bolt right up. front skid plates in 3/16" aluminum are $199, or front skid plate and rear diff cover are $279 for 3/16" (plus tax and shipping of course)
though if you feel up to it you could make your own (alot of people here use road signs for quick ones, but use this option at your own risk. lol)

The 4 pot fixed WRX brakes known also as group N brakes will be plenty for you. They are currently used on the majority of stage rally Subarus.

Hate to keep +1ing, but ^^^ yeah.
Remember, bigger calipers won't stop you any faster than smaller ones if they lock up your wheels already. Once the wheel stops turning, the calipers do nothing. I have stock WRX front brakes (2-pot slide calipers) with 2-pot fixed rears, and I can lock up a set of 215 wide BFG rally tires. Bigger brakes wouldn't help me much at all. So you'll be more than happy with the 4/2pot combo.
